Every year (last year was the first) my husband's workplace throws a Christmas party. It is to be hosted by an employee at their home. Last year we brought a poinsetta with us as a thank you.

She ended up sending us and everyone else a thank you for coming to her party. I never sent anything back. I was taken aback with a thank you for attending card. This year I plan on giving the poinsetta again. However, I'm concerned about what to do with the thank you for attending card. Should I ignore it? Or, send a card after the party (before hers is sent) thanking her once again for hosting the party?

I should also add, this is a *MAJOR* event for his company. It's not hoity toity, but a big to do. He works for a major corporation, and his bosses and CFOs and CIOs are there. Whatever I do word will travel fast.

Poinsetta's are a lovely hostess or host gift as a thank you. A nice bottle of wine is also nice to give. As to your concerns to the thank you card. Send yours out the next day after the party. I really never heard of responding to a thank you note or card. Even if you thank them when you leave the party should be enough.

I have known people to send a "thank you" note in response to receiving a "thank you" note but this is not required or even preferred. It would be OK, however, to send her a "thank you" card immediately after the party so she would receive it before she wrote you a "thank you" card.

Incidentally, I would bet (if there is a large number of employees) that the company provided her with assistance in writing those "thank you for attending" cards.

I always send a thank you note after a party. I also host a lot of parties. A few of my favorite hostess gifts I have received are (My favorite) A friend brought her camera and took pictures. After she had them developed she gave them to me in a small album. I also enjoyed the relaxation bath salts and stress relieving aroma candle that was accompanied by the kind note stating the person knew how hard I worked to prepare for the party and thought I would need to pamper myself after wards. She was right!!
