XP pro is for networks. It will let the computer join an Active Directory domain, among other tricks.

XP home is for home users (duh). While it will network with other computers, it really doesn't like to, at least not like XP Pro.

XP Media edition was built with the thought that your computer would be integrated with you home entertainment system. Personally I don't see the point, but that's me.

Depends on what you need the programs for or what you'll use windows for on what you need to buy. Home is if obviously for home use, office, for business things that are lots of word documents, and publisher, more elite programs that you would typically use on the job, professional is probably wat you want. Media is more for webcasting, etc. That's at least what I've been told by my friend who works on computers. Maybe call Staples or go on Microsoft.com because they tell you what they have included in the software.
