I want to improve my singing....I don't want to be like Celine Dion or whatever 'cos I wasn't born with the gift of singing. But sing at least like popular artists? Will a teacher help me reach that?

Singing is either a skill or a talent. A credible, encouraging teacher can help. Have more constant, correct practice too. Madonna was a member of a church choir before. Before you perform, pray or do whatever it is to relax your mind. Most of all, when you're on stage, look good so you feel good, put a soul into the song you sing, and believe in yourself!

If singing is your passion no one can stop you from becoming world-class singer. The voice is god-gifted but singing is a skill that can be learned.

If you can't afford a vocal coach the best option is to attend an online program.

This is the best-selling site that teaches how to reach new heights with massive control. It's a collection of tips, tools, video tutorials that will really help you to improve your singing voice.

A teacher will definitely help you with that. I would recommend avoiding Vocal Coachers though as a lot of vocal coaches tend to ruin voices (Can you sense some bitterness?).

Like others have said, practice definitely is the only way. And singing all the time. Singing in the shower is cliche but it is very good for warming up because of the steam.

Whenever I feel as though my singing is becoming rough and too strained, sleeping, drinking a ton of water, and resting my voice helps.

Pop artists aren't where the real talent is, for the most part. Pop artists are often just the singers with the most connections in the business and who have producers who make the artists sound good. Not many voice teachers will help you sound like them. You probably have to try that yourself.

No lie I have the same problem. My voice isn't great but I asked if I could come in to school early 2 days a week and get singing lessons from my music teacher. Trust me they work. She improved my voice rang from a low Alto to a Soprano. If not, I know there are some places where you can get singing lesson but there like 60 bucks a lesson. Not cheap! If you have a piano get sheet music to simple songs like "Jingle Bells" and play the notes. Practice matching the pitches and your voice will gradually gain a better vocal range! Good Luck!

Really, you don't need to be able to sing to sound like many pop artists. Yes, a teacher can help you learn to sing, but you'll be lucky to find someone who will want to teach you to sound like the radio.

To improve singing in general, there are lots of little tips, such as
- always warm up before you sing (ie: scales, humming, carefully strecthing your vocal chords between high and low registers)
- breathe deeply, into your diaphram
- sing from your diaphram
- drop your tongue/raise the pallet

The physical technique is only part of it, however. To truly sound good when you're singing, you need to train your ear so you can hear a pitch and match it vocally. You also need to learn to listen to yourself when you sing and think about making it sound good. A teacher could help you with all of these things. Finally, a good dose of confidence helps a lot, and don't forget to have fun. :)

Your vocal chords are a muscle - and like any muscle - can be trained and toned. While some people - like Celine Dion, Judy Garland, or Karen Carpenter - have a natural talent, it can still be trained to sound well. As far as performance, having vocal quality isn't always necessary, since singing a song, much like telling a story, relies on interpretation as well.

A singing coach will help you with proper breathing, note quality and other important aspects of singing. If you have a good voice a coach could make you significantly better.

Take classes. You can start making breathing exercises. Breathing is very very important and your teacher will probably.. or should start teaching you how to breath.
Hope you enjoy... and even if you have a "Celine Dion" voice, training makes wonders.
