It depends upon your definition of Paganism and your idea at religion. People like to have a community belief system - that much is evident by the number of belief systems this old earth has seen. People like to add structure and milestones to their lives with religious rites of passage, etc.

Pagans can be those who observe the old natural ways of times past or they can be defined as anyone who is not Christian, Jewish or Muslim. Religion can be a spiritual practice as well as an organized church. There is so much and so many shades of gray - why do we need to label and belittle everything different from ourselves?

Peace!

Well, Betty, tha't because you don't know a thing about Paganism. Likely, you don't know much about Christianity either, but that's not the point.

I've never been an atheist. I've always believed in a higher power. I searched until I found a religion that matched my beliefs, and I found Paganism most closely matches my view of the meaning of the world. It fits nicely with the concept of quantum physics, with evolution, and my views on reincarnation.

Paganism shows that I am more than an ineffectual being in an indifferent universe, and that i have personal responsiblility and accountability.

From an atheistic viewpoint, it may be no worse than Christianity, but it is not a "made-up religion". It is based on history and science and faith. It is much more than a play-time of an idle mind, and reqires much more of an individual than a mostly passive religion such as many Christians exhibit.

I guess this question shows how much you know about paganism.
There are many different sections under pagan.

As stated here.
1) WHAT IS PAGANISM? Stated simply: Paganism is an umbrella term for a myriad of religions that are not easily classified.
In some places the term has been applied to any religion, pseudo-religion, or lifestyle of an alternative nature that has tied itself to a past civilization in some way.
However, this definition does not come close to really defining what paganism is because there are over 2500 different religions that are classed as Pagan including religions that started out as part of many of the mainstream religions

Gee Betty, last week you said you talk to dead people. If you're an Athiest, don't you believe that life is finite, i.e. there is no soul that continues on after us (and therefore it is impossible for ghosts to exist so you can talk to dead people)?

I'm Wiccan and have very firm beliefs in my pantheon, as I imagine many Pagans do. I suggest you learn a bit more about paganism before you start trying to stir up a fight - or at the very least decide on what YOU believe before taking pot-shots at what WE believe.

Blessed be!

I think you are mistaken about Pagans. Many of them are very serious about their religion. Just because it doesn't have a traditional form that we are used to doesn't mean that people aren't devoted to it.
When you ask what Christians think about Pagans you are making a serious generalization. There are many different types of Christians and not all of them are the stupid kind that you usually see on this website.

if i were an athiest why would i spend the time and money that i have studying the religion of my ancestors.

why would i spend the time to learn the rituals and language of a dead people.

why would i dedicate an entire room of my house to altars and places to meditate when i really want a place to do my leather work.

why would i spend hours writeing in my book of days(shadows)

why would i study the religions of my neighbors so as not to offend their customs when i visit them.

why would i spend the time that i do here on YA answering questions about religion. and helping people to understand what Celtic Paganism is.

why would i go through the hassle of getting legally ordained so that i can preform legal marriage ceramonies.

why would i live by the morals of a by gone era. and seek to live a good life instead of just taking what i want from anyone smaller than me.

why would i extend a loving hand to my community and volunteer almost all of my free time to help fight hunger and homelessness, as well as diseases like cystic fibrosis and cancer.

As a Christian, it really doesn't matter to me. Pagan, Athiest, Wiccan, Satanist, Agnostic, etc. are all the same to me.
It's like Baskin Robbins...31 flavors of the same basic dessert.
Jesus put people in two categories regarding service to God. He said there are those that are with Him and those that are against Him.
If you're not following Jesus, you're on the other side. There are only two teams in this game with no sidelines. You're on one team or the other.
