Of course everyone should know you get it from smoking or passive smoke which is someone smoking near you .the other most common is from sunlight during the heat of the day ,to avoid this you should wear at least a tee shirt hat and suncream lotion 30 + the figure 30 means minutes of protection if you go swimming you need to check that it is water proof .Breast and bowel cancer are the next biggest killers examination by a doctor is best as early detection is better for a recovery .There are so many others it would take me pages to write so best both men and woman have at least yearly check ups any woman sexually active more so it is a simple test but again the sooner it is found the better chance of recovery .

There is not any definite "common way" people get cancer. Just because you are old doesn't mean you will get cancer. There are only things that are hereditary, certain exposures and lifestyle choices that can increase the chances of getting cancer. Cancer can strike a person who has never smoked or drank their whole life. But a person who smokes and drinks will have a much, much higher probability of developing cancer.

I would say that a LARGE percentage of increasing the risk of developing cancer comes from peoples lifestyle. ie, smoking, drinking, obesity, malnutrition, etc.

Not taking care of yourself, smoking, drinking, eating high fat foods or overeating (obesity), mutiple sex partners, too much exposure to the sun. Alot of cancers are more of a factor due to hereditary.
