It is an excellent question on a perennial issue which has been haunting human mind ever since evolution has started form mind to bliss or pure consciousness. Many answers have been touching the core of the issue whether the Truth to be revealed at all requires a person to be known as God sent. Who are these Prophets supporting or opposing them has divided the whole mankind who are in fight against each other in 'Crusades' and 'Jihads' or Dharma Yudhha. We as human beings act in accordance with our ignorance and claim that we are acting on behalf of the God and also claim that we are His Messenger. It is all untruth about the Truth because God himself is the ultimate Truth, and the manifest is His revelation which is ever living and eternal. This is what is taught in the Vedas and expounded in various Vedanta since time immemorial. No particular person has claimed as having been revealed by God in India. One has to realize the Truth himself by living a life of Truth and honesty. It is not some thing that one will earn and others will enjoy.

Each prophet throughout history has had a different role in preparing people for Christ. Some are easy to look back and see: e.g., Noah: Salvation of mankind while the earth was destroyed & population of a new world. Moses: Exodus & the Promised Land. John the Baptist: Preparing the way for Christ. Some are "minor" prophets so their role has not left such a historical change. Read Matthew 7 about telling the good fruit from the bad or rather what does their presence and word do . . . it helps one discern.

Because prophets prophecy in different capacities, to different people, with differing messages. The only thing legitimate prophets have in common is the Source of their prophetic gifting. Even the manner in which they may receive their prophecy is sometimes different! Some "hear" while others "know" while yet others may "see" & yet others may have a combination of these three methods.
A prophet sent to the people of Israel would have a different message than a prophet sent to the people of Nineveh; no?

Some wise persons were successful in disciplining the differing opinions in the society in its primitive stage. They are worshiped as Prophets, otherwise Socrates could also been worshiped for having exposed the untruth. So, the concept of Prophets or Messengers appear to be stories made by interested people to acquire popular support and strengthen their respective groups.

Imagine that there is a glowing light in the center of the room. 10 people from different points around the room are holding out their hands and pointing at the beautiful light. Some are pointing left and some are pointing right. Some are pointing South and some are pointing East. Some are pointing up and some are pointing at an angle, but all are pointing at the beautiful light.
Now lets say that for every pointing person or profit there are 1000 people backing them up and saying that their profits hand is pointing truly and the others are pointing falsely. How can your profit point West if I know that my Profit is true and he is pointing North? In the end arn't we all Just arguing about the finger? What about the Beautiful light?

God... The Last prophet of God was John The Baptist... there are no Prophets speaking fopr God today. The Salvation Message has been delivered... there are only two choises for mankind to choose from... ...choose wisely

Truth is a living experience which does not require a Messenger to tell. Prophets are actually a hoax as pointed out by someone earlier.

Truth to reveal requires an interpreter like a scientist or a philosopher; and not a Messenger. Prophet-hood is all a hoax.
