I'd get one immediately. The longer you're on your own, the more depressed you'll be. Having a cat gives you something to focus on besides your old one.

I am so sorry for your loss & I understand how you feel. As others have said there is no general guidline for how long you should wait before getting another cat. You will know when you are ready - you will see a cat who needs a home, or something (maybe the cat you just lost) will prompt you to look for another companion. There are always so many unwanted cats & kittens out there who need a home - you will be spoilt for choice when the time comes. Of course your cat was unique & no other cat could replace him, but you will be able to give a different corner of your heart & your home to another cat.

Oct.3rd. 2005 I lost my dear sweet Gracie. She was 16 years old and very sick so I had her put to sleep I couldn't afford to put her through chemotherapy.I didn't want to put her through that either. I missed having a cat around to boss me around, you see Gracie had me very well trained. I live near a pet supply store where I used to get Gracie's food and litter. I would see pictures of cats and dogs that people were looking for home for. I made up my mind that If I could find a cat past the kitten stage and already declawed (a pessary evil if you are going to have a cat as a pet in this building)and spayed or neutered another necessity. I saw this picture of a beautiful cat needing a good home her name is Mia and she is 2&1/2 spayed and declawed. I called and asked "Have you found a Home for Mia yet?" instead of saying the cat.The voice on the other end said "Well a lady has asked for her but she isn't sure just yet can you please call me back?" I said I would love to be Mia's new Mommy"When I did call back she said she wanted me to have Mia because I called her by name and didn't say the cat and I said I would love to be her Mommy and not just "I'll give her a good home." I told her about my Gracie and how much I loved her.
Well what I am getting around to is go ahead and get another cat.Mia has never replaced Gracie but sheis good company and I love her very much I have had her for a year now. She is a very good companion for me. You would be happy that you did get another cat.

I had to euthanize my 22 and 1/2 yr old cat on Friday and it leaves a very deep wound in the heart. I did not have her for all those 22 years as she was a "rescue" cat I brought in when she was 15. My animal communicator treated me with Arnica 30C over the telephone yesterday and the heaviness was lifted from my heart. You can get that at a health pharmacy or health foods store. One dose of the 30C will help you a great deal.

I have five other cats and one a recent "rescue" so I am not lonely for cat company. As an adoption counselor for many years I was happy to play a small part in helping people find the perfect cat for their home. There is a cat out there who needs you and wants your special love and care and who will give you many years of love and affection.

Maybe you might volunteer at a shelter for a while - beware you will want to take them all into your home. Or when you are ready and feeling a little better just go and spend some time at a shelter - cats pick their owners and a loving paw will reach out to you.

pssst cats the plural has no apostrophe. Cat's means 'cat is' or 'cat has' or 'belonging to the cat'.

As for the main question, wait until you feel you are ready. There is no time scale set in stone or a rule book. It took me 9 months to get over the loss of my collie and I got another rescue one 2 weeks ago. 9 months was right for me, but thast's not to say it would be right for you. If you feel ready, go along to a rescue centre and see which one pulls at your heartstrings. There are hundreds of loving friendly adult cats sitting in rescue centres all over the country just waiting for someone to come along and give them a loving home. Meanwhile everyone passes them by because they want kittens. They may be pretty, friendly, loving cats. The only thing that is wrong with them is that they aren't under 6 months old. :0(

Sorry to hear about your cat, it's so sad when you lose a pet. I think you should get one when you feel it is right to do so. There are plenty of rescue cats desperate for a little love and affection. When i lost mine after 14 years, i got 2 soon after, then another adopted me so now i have 3.

You can never replace your cat, but another will bring a little joy into your life and vice versa. Good Luck!

I know how u feel! I had a cat for 11 years. I waited until I thought that I was ready. U may not be ready for another 2 or 3 years. Or even 2 or 3 more weeks! U just have to wait until u are ready. That is what I did.

You know I can't say how long you should wait, there is no waiting time, but you will know when it's time for you.

I went through this last year losing my best buddy cat. I knew I would eventually get another cat, but no time limit was in my mind.

8 months later something told me it was time. I was tired of my house feeling lifeless, and feeling something was missing.

So, the time told me, I didn't tell it, that the time is now. I adopted two kittens from a shelter and now my house has life in it again.

My advice is wait until you are spiritually ready. You will know you don't have to ask , you will just KNOW.

I am so sorry about the loss of your good friend. You don't have to wait unless you want to. Why don't you go to an animal shelter and see if one of those cats would tempt you. They all need a good home and you obviously could offer them one. You are right you can NEVER replace a cat but you can help yourself to feel a bit better

There's no real answer other than when you are ready. I had a cat go missing and tried everything for over a year to find her and eventually got another cat for company - took me a long time to pick her though - went to lots of cat rescue centres. Then bizarrely I got my cat back after four years and now have two!

You are the only one who knows when the time is right for you.

Don't wait to long, it will just make you more lonely. Why not 'save a Cat'? The cats in your nearest animal home (like Battersea Dogs Home, which has cats too) these animals only get put down if no one will house them and they know which people like and want cats or animals, it is a sense all animals have.
