Just like any visual art form, Photography starts with an image developed in a persons mind. It starts as a concept that then is brought to life using the photographic medium.. There are technical aspects to any art including composition, perspective, etc, and photography is no different. A photograph can be as simple as a candid snapshot, or as difficult, and demanding of an artist as an Ansel Adams print of "Moon over Half Dome". A photograph doesn't have to be simplistic... You shoot a picture of grandma blowing out her birthday cake candles at her birthday party, take the film, or digital card down to walmart, print them out, show them around a few times and then they're stuffed in a drawer somewhere. A photograph can be manipulated, cut, pasted, dodged, burned saturated, desaturated, cropped, exposed in different ways, hue changed, sharpened, blurred, color corrected, printed, digitized, etc. It all goes back to what was in the photographers minds eye when he first had the idea for the shot. Just like Monet, DaVinci, Picasso, Michelangelo, Etc.

You might research photographic art museums or books and actually see some of this type of art to understand the difference between them and a snapshot, for instance. Shadows, emotions on faces, various designs can make wonderful art. An easy way to do it is to go to a library and find the art books sections. Just looking at both photographic and painted art will show the similarity. Another way is to take a Photography class in Junior College or High School. The teacher can show you the difference as you learn.

Some photographers are also artists in that they produce artistic works (just with photography). Art is the end result of an artistic process. Photography is a medium like painting or dance or sculpture.

Everything is art to any certain person... It doesn't have to be considered art in your eyes to be art to someone else :o)

The Oxford English Dictionary defines are as:

I.I Skill; its display or application. Sing. art (abstractly); no plural.
1.I.1 gen. Skill in doing anything as the result of knowledge and practice.
