http://www.lastminutetravel.com/ and http://priceline.com both have cheap prices and so does southwest.com and jetblue.com those are the places you will find the cheapest airline tickets. And I have done my research on this stuff so I know.

Long as I'm buying in advance (but less than 30 days) I use Hotwire.com, I also book some of my packages through them and they've given me money back for the slightest inconveniences. Very satisfied with price and service.
All my flying has been intercontinental, for international I don't know!
