I'm in college and i was about to leave class and this guy tells me "thats a nice jacket". I thought to myself is he gay. I dont know cause he doesnt act or look stereotypically gay but these days you never know. Do you think he's gay or was he just being nice?

Would the compliment mean less to you if he WAS gay?
Gay or straight, I can say with almost complete certainty that a compliment on a jacket is by no means a way of hitting on you.
And being kind about someones clothing does not make a person gay or straight.
It means they are making conversation.

this can be interpreted in many different ways.
Either:
1. He is gay
2. He is being nice
3. He want to know where you bought from
4. He is being sarcastic
5. He sees some dirt on your jacket or something similar
6. He thinks he is making new friends
7. He thinks he is getting social
or many other reasons

I think regardless of whether he was gay or not, he was being nice. If he's straight it was nice, if he's gay it was still a nice gesture.
Above anything else, classify the comment as nice
