We threw a party over the weekend and one of my hubby's friends crunched up and snorted a hydrocodone pill. Why did they do this and won't it hurt them? I told them it wasn't a good idea, but they said it was just the same as swallowing it....???

Go to erowid.org and click plants and drugs.
The site tries to stay non-biased by only giving facts, then there is a section that tells personal experiences with various drugs, both good and bad.

I've stayed away from pharmaceuticals myself due to my ease of access any addictiveness...but crushed up and snorted allowes for quicker and stronger onset of effects.

I think some of the other responses are harsh though. Frequent use is ofcourse bad, but recreational, once in a blue moon use shouldn't be looked down upon worse than alcohol use.

It is a common practice for drug abusers to crush and snort hydrocodone pills. The difference between swallowing and snorting pills varies from minor to extreme. The first difference is a crushed pill has a much larger surface area and is absorbed into the blood stream much faster than an intact pill. For example, crushing an extended-release pill would mean that the entire dose would all be administered at once, which could be harmful.

Another factor is the acidity of the pill. When crushed, certain powders could cause acidic damage to the sinuses. Chronic abusers of cocaine often have eroded their nasal septum to the point of having a hole between their nostrils.

With hydrocodone, the potential for harm from snorting low doses is somewhat rare. The bigger concern is to get them to understand the danger of abusing prescription painkillers.

They do this to get high quicker. Hydrocodone is a highly addictive substance. When snorted, there can be damage to the brain and sinuses. These aren't really great friends.

I think the snort factor makes it kick a little harder and faster. If there wasn't a difference, he would have swallowed.
