Your so lucky to have a Grandmother . I never had one . Both were gone before I was born . But if I had a 85 year old Gramma I would give her a wonderful hug . Tell her how much I loved her . At this age she probably has most anything she wants or needs . A nice sweater is what you give . Then if she is able to walk yet take her to the window on Christmas Eve and Tell her to look at the sky . Tell her every star in the sky is just for her . And every time she looks up at them to remember that you told her that they were hers . I know I would like to get that for a gift . I know I'm easy to buy for .

At the age of 85yrs, she has just about all she wants or needs! Then again depends on the situation, I was a nurse for 30yrs and dealt with the aging people during all that time. Its a very simple issue ~~~~~~ TIME!
How real is that, simple and to the point. Not saying that you do this, most family members are so busy they have little or no time to visit and do those little things with the elderly members.
Give her a living plant that she might be able to care for with a card. In this card, promise her a visit for each month of the year, you will see the biggest smile in the world! She needs your time more than anything you could buy and depending on her health and ability to get around, you can decide what the visit might be. I nice trip out for coffee or tea, heck a trip to Walmart, they have wheelchairs that she can be pushed and enjoy the days she used to shop long ago. You could come over that day and sit with her during coffee, a small hamburger, or whatever you might come out with.
I'm 56yrs and love when my daughters come over and invite me to lunch, hahhahah, i usually have to pay. Its a good time to talk about this and that and caught up with whatever issues are in the family.
When you make that visit, invite your mother or Dad(her child) for the visit and see her smile even more!

A nice warm, flannel blanket throw. Or a robe, but remember something with large buttons down the front so that her hands can get into it easily, no zippers or robes that have to be put on over the head. What does she like? Does she hear well, maybe a nice audio book. But, remember to keep it to subjects she's interested in, no "Hiking in Tibet". If you don't have a lot of money, you can give her an envelope of pieces of paper that say things like 1 afternoon
with your grandchild, a day of help around the house, 2 back rubs, a trip to the grocery store, church, doctor, etc. But when she calls, be there. You are the most important thing in her life. You cared enough to ask this question about what she'd like. God Bless You!

Something to keep her mind sharp...
Try puzzles (you can get a puzzle made with a photo of you or her family too try walmart for that in the photo lab... but if you want that you need to do it within the next 2-3 days to insure it will be back in time for the big Green & Red Holiday! Don't trust there 2 week garantee!!!!)
Word cross books
Earrings
Necklace (if she doesn't have to much jewery now)
Vintage Barbie
Bird food holders to put outside her windows so she can watch the birds (My 81 year young Nanny loves hers!!)
A nice sweater that is comfortable
A purse
To be a little more personal try gathering all the old photos of her and getting them redone at walmart or target (if there not professional, doesn't matter how old they are either) and put them in a scarp book for her... start from when she was a baby to now!!!
Good Luck

My gramma's favorite gift was always a box of gourmet chocolates. She really loved a box of 24 truffles at $2.49 each. She died this year at 88 and now I miss her bad. I know I did my personal best for her and saw her every week and kept up her house and yard. We always made our lunch together even as she got sick and I had to do the most. It made her feel useful. Her wish was to die in her own home and between me and my cousin and his wife, we were able to grant her wish. She did love her expensive chocolates.

a nice warm blanket that she can snuggle up in, a pair of fuzzy house shoes with the no slip grip soles. you can get these in department stores. a beautiful Christmas cactus in bloom, my grandma always loved scented body lotions and soaps, so you might get her something at bath and body works. even a magazine subscription to something like birds and bloom, they have beautiful pictures in them that she'd enjoy looking at, and she'd be getting this gift for a year!
I hope this helps you out!

My hubby's grandma is 91,we get her nightgowns, blouses or this year she wants a new tablecloth and matching chair pads for her dining room. The year before last,we had her name embroidered on a nice throw blanket for her,she loved it! I'm sure whatever you get will be appreciated.

I think a scarf would be nice, or something of a handknitted sweater or something. Think the elderly would appreciate more of something that comes from your heart, not something of pricing value. :P
