The speed will come with time. The more you ride, the more proficient you become and you will try doing it faster. Just continue practicing and it will come. If you are scared, listen to yourself, and take your time. When we are learning to drive a car, we have to learn how to maintain speed, steer, and control. It takes time to put all of that together, just like it does in barrel racing. You will get there, have fun and keep it up!

Keep it slow for the moment. First you need to build up a relationship with your horse. Learn to trust him and have him trust you. Forget about speed, just work on turning, etc.
Once you feel comfortable, try it a little faster. Have patience and soon you'll soon love going fast! I still sometimes practice at the walk or trot.

I think you just have to learn to trust your horse. I would suggest just going out riding. Get a feel of him/her. Once you develop a relationship with your horse, you'll feel much better about things.

You gotta learn to trust your horse, and be prepared for some scarred up shin bones. Once your horse learns the pattern, what, cloverleaf?, you really don't have to do much more than hang on and encourage him. And wear knee pads.
