I want a tattoo of a butterfly with tribal around it. It would look good on my lower back. I've never gotten a tattoo before and I don't know if that is a good place to get it done for a first. I also want a tattoo in memory of my mom who died when I was 6. I don't know where or what to get. Suggestions?

I DON'T want it too visible. I want it where I can cover it. NOT ankle. Not foot. Not arm.

i would suggest first of all that you not get a tattoo with "tribal" anything unless you are actually from a culture that has tribal tattoos as part of their culture. you should go to an artist that tattoos and have them custom design a tattoo just for you. i think you'll be happier with that than something that a ton of other people have.

I think the lower back is a good place to get your first tattoo. I just got my first there, and the pain was not too bad at all. It's easy to hide, unless you wear lots of hipsters and short tops. I've seen some lovely designs of tribal butterfly's - maybe you could incorporate your mothers name in the design. Try tattoojohnny.com. They have some lovley designs by a lady named Monica Moses. Good luck!

I would recommend you do the one in memory of your mom first, that is, if you want the tattoo bad enough. If you don't, and get the other one and decide it is too painful, you will still be wishing you'd gotten one for your mom. I have a hummingbird near a flower on my upper chest. It was more painful the lower it was but it is off to the side far enough so I can wear a tank top without it showing. If you decide to put something in that area, try on different styles of clothing to get an idea of how much of yourself you expose.
Please also take into consideration that pain is different on different parts of the body, depending on your muscular build and if you have extra fatty tissue too. You will need to be somewhat tolerant of pain but it is worth it in the long-run if you want the art bad enough. Good luck!

Generally tattoos that are wider look better in the lower back. They are very cool, very trendy tattoos. As for the one for your mom, find something that has meaning for you and for her. Did she have a favorite flower, animal, color, etc? Was there something special that you did together? Take your time with it and once you find what you want, wait on in for another month or so. You only have one tribute to your mother and you won't want to look back on it and say I wish it was something different. Good places for it are a shoulder blade or on the outside of your thigh high enough that shorts or a skirt will cover. Tasteful tattoos will draw less negative commentary even in more formal settings.

First before you decide on which place to have it done, look up several tattoo parlors in the phone book ( at least then you know the place has a permanent location, that way if you have a problem you can go back to them) and then go to check them out. Things to look for 1.) Is the place clean? 2.) Is the tattoo artist him/herself appear clean? 3.) Ask questions about hiis/her work, ask to look at the equipment, does it look like it's sterilized? and ask if they have any photo albums with pictures of their work. 4.) Look at the art they offer. Are the designs what you are looking for? Remember, you will have this on your body forever. Go to at least 2 or 3 shops before you decide where you want to have it done. If the place is reputable they won't hassle or pressure you. Be honest and tell them you're still thinking about it and just want to be safe and sure.
I love the butterfly idea for your back and for the one of your mother, why not tattoo her name in a script design like a bracelet around your wrist? My granddaughter put her other grandmas name on her wrist with a pink ribbon to represent the cancer she died from. It's very pretty and this way she sees it herself all the time when she looks at her hand and she thinks of the good memories of her granny.

My first tat WAS a butterfly, which I got on my right shoulder. I would suggest getting your first - in a location which wouldn't include alot of pain. ( some spots are more sensitive for this )

You could always go to a reputable artist who might let you feel what it is like to get tattooed without actually being tattooed with ink - just to know whether or not you can handle it - because some people just don't have the pain threshold for getting one.

Good luck!

that's not an appropriate thing to ask us it's your choice, you're the one who has to live with it, the butterfly sounds like a good idea. perhaps fro the one in memory of your mother you should ask your dad what her favourite things are. i want to get one in memory if my dad who died when i was 12 so i chose between two of his favourite things doves of carnations. i had a look at some pictures of both these things on google and chose a pink carnation which supposedly means "i will always remember you". whether it does or not i don't know but i don't care because i love it all i have to do now is get it transferred from paper to skin

Lower back is good but the only downfall is that you can't see it unless you look in the mirror, everyone else can see it but you. as for the remeberance of your mom I would do that one on a shoulder blade. Unless you are planning to go into a feild of work that doesn't mind tattoos, take caution in where you place them. Think about your job, think about formal atire if you ever attend events like that.

the lower back area is probably one of the most painful due to all the nerve endings there. but tattoos really hurt about the same where ever you get them. i have 12 and i guess the one that hurt the most was one on the upper back when it ran into the neck area. when you know your tattoo and you know where you want it and you look there one day and go hey where my tattoo why isn't it there? that's when you go get it. and they hurt like a burn.

well maybe you should get a tatto of your moms name and angel wing around like on your neck upper right or left side of your back. Well in my opinion i like a tattoo with 2 angel wings on the back. But i know it will hurt when you get it so you must take care of it and sooner you'll be better.
