I was told that I could find a great deal on used cameras. These cameras are the ones that people take back because it is too difficult for them to operate. Is that true? What are some advantages and drawbacks to purchasing a camera this way?

The advantage is that you SHOULD save a lot of money. I would suggest getting an aftermarket warranty, such as a Mack warranty, for maybe five years on the equipment, though. You never know if the thing has been dropped or something else is wrong with it. It would help to really know the dealer you are buying from.

You can save a lot of money, but sometimes people take them back because they don't work. So if you do this, get an extended warranty.
