Well, a letter wouldn't be appropriate, and fax even less so. A phone call could get a little sticky, but would probably be OK if you're good on the phone. A singing telegram would be nice, or a mutual friend to kind of break the ice first with some old fashioned "You know, Helen really likes you, you should give her a call," or something like that. I've always had a terrible fear of rejection, and am a little timid in terms of things like this, but the best way is to probably just ask in person. Something spontaneous and spur of the moment might work good. "You know, I heard there's a new Chinese place over on Main Street. Why don't you and I go over there and try it Henry. I just hate going alone." It could be anything of course, but that would give him the idea you hate being alone, and save face if for some reason he hates your guts.

first of all, I think it's great that you're going to ask this gentleman out! my dad is 67, and just started dating recently. [ we lost my mom to cancer about a yr. and a half ago ]
the lady my dad is dating kind of asked him out, and he was thrilled! he wanted to ask her, but he was just too nervous! my dad was talking to this lady, and told her that it sure was lonely coming home to an empty house, and not having someone there with him when we would all go out for dinner. and she told him that she would just love be his dinner date anytime he felt like going. and they've been together ever since! she's a wonderful person, and we all adore her. [ she also lost her husband ]
so I think you should tell this gentleman that you'd like to go to dinner, and was just wondering if he'd like to join you as your date. I think that's a lady like and honest approach. and I bet you'll be making him a very happy man!
I Wish You the Very Best.

Ask him to your home for a home cooked meal, or to a museum or exhibit or something that's free. That way you aren't in the awkward position of "who pays" because for your generation, generally speaking, the man does the asking and paying. But it's perfectly acceptable to offer him a home cooked meal. Also, it's usually understood that the asker pays. To ask him to a movie or out to dinner, might create an awkward moment. You also don't want to embarrass him by offering to pay his way, as if you're williing and desperate enough to 'buy' company.
If you offer to cook him dinner, he can likewise offer to take you to a movie or something afterwards. I hope I explained my thoughts without sounding insulting, because I didn't mean to.

How would you like to go to a movie, dinner, etc?

-Would you like to go for a coffee?
-There's a great new exhibition at the museum. Would you like to go?
-Would you like to come for dinner tonight?
-Or whatever...
Just ask him. It's okay. Just because we get older in years doesn't mean we become older in spirit! You go, girl!
