Because cats like to be really clean (that's why they clean themselves a lot) and water to them is like dirt they think it makes them dirty!

My cat Mia loves water she splashes in her drinking water and gets her feet all wet. I had another cat many years ago (Casper) who would jump into the bathtub with us when we were taking baths. So it depends on the cat.

I think it is because they aren't exposed to it.I had a cat that loved water because he had bathes since he was six weeks old

my cat sucks up water constantly. I'm proud of her too.
I give her fresh water in her dish twice a day.

My cat drinks out of the bathroom sink but you have to turn it on very softly

I dont think anyone truely knows why they hate water. (Just ignore the first poster by the way). They just do...I have heard of a breed that likes water, though I cant recall it at the momment. You could look it up at www.ask.com

When it soaks into their fur it add about 10 lbs to their back

I believe it is because they feel vulnerable and defenceless while in water.
