I am 15 and i broke my arm about 2 weeks ago in cheerleading. i broke it in 6 parts and had 4 fractures. i have to wear a full arm plaster cast for 8 months and then a brace on just my forearm for atleast 3. my first question is.. is that normal to have a cast for that long?
and.. any advice to make things easier?

I had a minor break this summer (only a 3 week, half cast thing). I had to learn how to write with my other hand, and got pretty good at it, but found typing one handed to be a lot easier and faster.

Ummm, other advice to make things easier. Get your sister, or mom, or someone to help you dress.

If you don't have a table to eat at, only get food that you can eat with one hand.

If you have chores like dishes that you normally do, ask your folks to buy some paper plates for when it's your turn.

Try to keep a smile on - it's really easy to get depressed and frustrated when your body just doesn't work.

And last, but most important of all - be very good about doing all your exercises or physical therapy your doc recommends so you can get your full strength and range of motion back as soon as possible.

If you had a simple fracture, you would not be in a cast as long. Your arm broke in 6 parts... Dang that must have hurt. The smaller pieces can bear support without the risk of moving out of place, so the cast must stay on longer to make sure that the growth is strong enough to support its own weight when the cast is removed. The brace will be for additional support while it is still healing. I had a cousin with a similar problem but it was with her leg. She broke her leg in several places and fell down a hill. She had to crawl back up the hill in order to get help. The good news was that she did get help, the bad news was that the hill was covered with poison ivy. Her cast had to stay on for several weeks and she had poison ivy welts underneath the cast..

You will do just fine. I hope you get all your friends to sign your cast. I hope this does not cramp your cheerleading activities too much. I'm sure you will be able to find lots of young gentlemen willing to jump at the chance to carry your books, open doors, and tend to your everyday needs. Milk it for what it is worth. ;-)

Depending on where the fractures are it can take that long. To help the bones knit (much) faster get some homeopathic Symphytum in a 6C potency. Take 3 tablets daily for 5 days, 2 days off and repeat. You can also take, at the same time, the tissue salt Calcarea Phosphoricum in a 3X or 6X potency to strengthen the bones. You can take 3 a day for several weeks.

I dont know about how long a cast should be on... I only had mine on for 3 weeks. I do suggest getting a water proof cast if you can, it makes all the difference (helps with the itching). Just be sure you dry it really good.

ok well i dunno about the arm thing, but are they making you quite cheering? cuz i remember from a lizzie mcguire episode (i know i hate it too) i saw a while ago that they did all the same things - just one handed. one handed cartwheels, one handed handstands, one handed backflips, and it was awesome!!! i wish i could find a website to show you how, but i couldnt. but if you keep practicing than i bet you could keep cheering... if you want to :)

it sounds about right....you injured it 10 times, so it would take awhile to heal.
