Terms:
CHEVERONS = Upside-down V
ROCKERS = A U shaped

For the Army:

Private (no rank on uniform) = E-1
Private (1 Cheveron) = E-2 (sometimes called Private 2nd Class)
Private 1st Class (1 cheveron with rocker underneath) = E-3 (also known as PFC)
Specialist (solid rank with army shield) OR Corporal (2 cheverons) = E-4
Sergeant (3 cheverons) = E-5 (Buck Seargent)
Staff Sergeant (3 cheverons with rocker underneath) = E-6
Sergeant 1st Class (3 cheverons with 2 rockers underneath) = E-7

NEXT ONES HAVE 3 cheverons with 3 rockers underneath:

Master Sergeant OR 1st Sergeant (Diamond in rank) = E-8
Sergeant Major = E-9 (star in the center of rank)
Command Sergeant Major = E-9 (star with wheat in the center)
Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA) = E-9 (Army shield in center)
