Looking at it from my son's point of view, I must seem to disappear when he goes to his dad's house. I don't want there to be too many gaps in his conceptualisation so I'm going to take him in so he can see where I work. Have you done this? If not I think it's a good idea.

Growing up, I never went to work with my parents and didn't have a factual concept of what they where. However, I think we do conceptualize and fill the gaps with some bits and pieces. I don't think there is any real need to bring your child to work. It is just a matter of preference for you, which may bring you some comfort, but it won't have any significant impact on the child either way.

As an employer, I've never been a big fan of kids at work. There just couldn't be a bigger distraction. I'm a liberal minded guy, but in this case, I see us as having become a society of bleeding hearts. As an employee, it doesn't help your chances of promotion. The boss is paying for productivity.

Yes, all of my children have been to both my workplace and my husbands (for brief visits). Even if you think your toddler may be too young to understand, I think it would help some for them to get an idea that "work" is a physical place where their parent is all day.

I am lucky... one of my children goes to work with me everyday! I am a preschool teacher, so my two-year-old attends the same preschool that I work at. She loves going to the same place where I am during the school day. My oldest attends the elementary school right next door, so I am available to pick her up everyday right after school. Both of my children have also visited my husband at his work, and he has taken our oldest with him if he has to go back to work in the afternoon. I think it's great for children to see where their parents work... it gives a concrete idea of what and where "work" is, and shows them that during the time they are apart from their parents that they are doing something important for the family.

I'm a horseshoer so my son goes with me to barns all the time but I remember going to my parents work places as a young child and loving it. It's a wonderful idea if you work in a situation where it's safe and acceptable to have him visit.

I have and it's was really cool for my 3 year old to see because I work in the animal business and he loves cats and dogs so I agree with you 100% if you can take your child to work at least once you should do it then they can see why you leave them everyday for few hours..

no, my son is almost 3 and I work in a call center. I can't have him being loud in there. Once he's a bit older, I'll bring him down.

I'm lucky, I can work an alternate schedule so I only work 3 days a week.

Make sure he is old enough at least to understand what it is you do and that he can behave himself well enough not to get into anything at your place of work. You also need to have some sort of related activity for him to do so he thinks he is "working." I would not do this with anyone under 4, totally potty trained, and a bit advanced for his/her age.
