hi all,
something odd is going on with my friends 99 gr jeep cherokee..
one minute it starts with a lil hesitation..like there is a slight drain on the battery..battery is old and will soon be replaced.
He told me that it isn't so much the battery as the idle..???
the idle seemed to be working okay.it was like 60 degrees today..but he said the car seemed to stall on him in the morn and/or he had to press the gas to get her to turn over.
??? I thought I put some fuel inj cleaner in the tank just in case.
once again the idle seemed to be working fine.didn't really flux..stayed constant.
.then later on the car seemed to stall on me..barely turn over..and couldn't maintain any idle..bottomed out to zero.
Then later on the car started okay..turned over like before..but was idleing a lil lower on the tact than the first time I tried.
I didn't adjust anything..seems like something is sticking..any help will be greatly appreciated..
thanks..what do you think is the problem?

First thing I would check is the alternator. Make sure that is putting out 14.3 volts. These have a bad reputation of putting out low voltage and that makes the motor turn over slower to crank, as well as the low voltage making the computer erratic and the engine run poorly. Later in the day when the car is warmed up it will run better and idle better. Also there is a coolant temp sensor that tells the computer how cold the engine is and adjusts the fuel accordingly. THe idle speed motors on these are troublesome as well. Still, being it is a 4.0 jeep I'd check that alternator first. "Don't" use the guage on the dash as they are usually way off. Get somebody to check it with a real voltmeter to see if it puts out enough volts, and also that it continues to put out near that much with all the loads such as headlights, ac and such turned on and idling.

My advice would be to replace the Idle air control valve. Did the check engine light come on and stay on when the engine stalled? If it did, please scan the computer for any DTC's (Diagnostic Troubleshooting Codes). The DTC's will help you pin point the exact area of the problem. The engine will stall when you have a bad Idle air control Valve and when the valve heats up. Clean the throttle body with some throttle body cleaner because there could be some carbon build up on the passages. What size is the engine? 4.0L or 4.7L? Let me know if the check engine light came on and what the codes are so that I can further assist you with you're problem. Thanks, Jess.

substitute to 15w40 oil. on the comparable time as at an idle, the oil pump is now not waiting to save up with the intake or inner leakage around the bearings. This oil has a greater robust viscosity and could with fairly of success improve the oil tension at an idle. additionally, be sure which you idle is on the the final option RPM. At that mileage, i could choose to choose changing the engine or the finished motorized motor vehicle.

very first thing, if the battery is old, replace it. on modern vehicles the computor can go nutzo when it looses battery voltage. We have to let the vehicle "relearn" itself after disconnecting the battery. so replace the battery, have the charging and starting system properly checked and then your going to have to relearn the computor and go from there. after you do this, if you still have problems, let me know, I have a 98 Grand Cherokee
