A very weighty and solemn matter. The Son of Man is finishing His earthly work and returning to heaven. He is preparing His followers for His departure. In this first parable in this chapter after He had answered them already as to the end time questions He tells them in the first parable the critical matter of watching AND being prepared for His return,
Mark 13:37
And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!”
In the next parable in this chapter He teaches them to be ready to give account when He returns and in the third parable to be prepared for the judgment when He returns.
Most serious stuff that the fools and wicked ignore.

This parable is about a wedding. On the wedding day, the bridegroom went to the bride's house for the ceremony; then the bride and groom, along with a great procession, reutrned to the groom's house, where a feast took place often lasting a full week.
These ten bridesmaids were waiting to join the procession and they hoped to take part in the marriage feast. But when the groom didn't come at the expected time, five of them were out of lamp oil. By the time they had purchased extra oil, it was too late to join the feast.
When Jesus returns to take his people to heaven, we must be ready. Spiritual preparation cannot be bought or borrowed at the last minute. Our relationship with God must be our own.

THE PARABLE’S PURPOSE

One of Jesus’ most colorful illustrations was that of the “ten virgins.” It is also highly significant to us, particularly at this time. What was its purpose? It was given to aid Christians, especially Christians living today, to discern Christ’s presence in Kingdom power.

Jesus’ apostles had asked him: “What will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?” (Matt. 24:3) In reply, he listed many events, including several illustrations, occupying Matthew chapters 24 and 25. All those things he pointed to are features constituting the great sign of his presence, invisible, in Kingdom power.

Jesus’ parable of the “ten virgins,” recorded at Matthew 25:1-12, was given not only so that his disciples living on earth at the time of his second coming would discern his presence. Additionally, Jesus designed the parable to show them the need for watchfulness, awakeness, so as not to miss out, as did the Pharisees at Jesus’ first coming.
Also, the parable points out responsibilities and duties that Christ’s disciples would have during his presence as King. (Ps. 110:3) Jesus wanted all whom God had given the “heavenly calling” to remain faithful and to achieve that marvelous goal of joint heirship with him in the Kingdom.—Heb. 3:1; Rom. 8:17; Rev. 20:4, 6.

This parable always bothered me until I released the oil was the relationship with Christ you have through the Holy Spirit. If someone has developed their own relationship, you cannot carry them along. There comes a time, they have to step forward with faith and develop their own relationship. So when the Savior returns, they cannot look at you and say give me this relationship with Christ you have so I may have it as well.

Like the virgins and the bridegroom, we have no idea when Jesus will be returning. Therefore, like the women who brought extra oil, we should be prepared for his coming at all times - following his commandments; loving God, and loving others. Otherwise, he will return when we do not expect it, and our sould will not be ready to greet him. As the foolish vigins were shut out of the wedding feast, so will we be shut out of the kingdom of heaven.

Yes - lots of people that behave themselves and play games at being Christian are not getting in. There are tares mixed in with the wheat. To be a Christian, one needs to serve Jesus as Lord. To serve Christ is to make him higher than anything in a person's life. But we can do nothing for Christ, unless we abide in Him. The oil they are looking for is the Holy Ghost, since they had no oil for their lamps (Christians with no light). These virgins play lip-service to the Lord. You can tell who they are in church - they are the ones with all the pious platitudes, yet gossip every chance they get. You know them by their fruits.

Trying to get one's act together at the last second is to try to manipulate God's ways by a technicality. He isn't go to play that game.
