Someone told me that you shouldn't let your dog sleep on or play with your clothing because he'll chew it up and not know the difference between chewing what you give him and chewing up clothing you do not want him to chew.
my dog did it for years and chewing my old sweatshirts to pieces gradually, mostly from dragging it around but also he just liked to chew parts of it off (he didn't like logos, the stiching wasn't comfy I guess) but he never chewed up any clothing that someone was wearing or that was out around him unless I gave it to him.
Of course he never ate food unless I gave it to him either, or I nudged it towards him if it fell, so maybe he is just weird?

I've had him for years and he's never chewed something he wasn't supposed to chew on since he was a small puppy.

Giving clothing to your dogs particularly puppies is a good thing. It makes them feel closer to you their owner. This is important when you are not home or at night when your dog is sleeping in his crate. There is nothing wrong with them snuggling up to an old sweatshirt or sweater so long as they don't try to make every piece of clothing you own theirs.

Every body has their own alternative of dogs, small, medium or big, me i like all of them and my preferences within the breeds i love are Min.Schnauzers Newfoundlands Akita Malamutes Rhodesian Ridgebacks quality Pyrenees Rotti's These are my fave breeds, and that i do have a small canine as well, i like my Schnauzers, that is the only small breed i would own.... I'm not towards any breed, and it does make me mad when any individual talks down about any breed, particularly after they do not know the breed. Love them all.... Legit::There just are tremendous canine fans and then some folks that handiest love the small or medium breeds....Its not discrimination, its the breed they love and decide on... Just like the Irish Wolfhound, significant large dog, and i have seen owners with them and likewise own a Jack Russell in addition...Its only a alternative... And the enormous breeds will also be so sweet, and get blamed for bad things, this gives the breed a nasty name...But you hardly hear, oh no that Boston Terrier simply ripped off the neighbors leg....Small dog, small bites still harm LOL

Nah, it's not bad. Whoever told you that hasn't the slightest what they're talking about.
I do that with most animals if I think they are cold;;cats and dogs alike. Your dog knows better;;giving an animal clothing to sleep on/with is no different then giving them a chew toy, or a blanket. They decide it's thier own and make modifications to fit the way they want it.

If you're not home enough (for the dog... depends largely on the breed/temperament) then placing an item of clothing (old and
you've worn many times so your "scent" is on it) in their sleeping area helps a lot with separation anxiety. Otherwise it might become a behavioral issue that you do not want to encourage. Dogs need a firm (but loving) understanding of their place in a household, what is off limits and what is acceptible. If he picks up clothing you do not want him to, you need a firm, verbal reprimand, take it away and lead him back to what you put in his sleeping area. Repeat as many times as needed and do not give in! Ideally he shouldn't be chewing on clothing... enforce the above but use real doggie chew toys.

You are a bad dog owner. Dogs should never be allowed to do that.

As long as your not bothered by him sleeping on clothing, he's happy, and it's not affecting his health, then I don't see a problem with it.
