A guy is interested in you, do you straight up ask him or are there signs?

Both. He may be hanging out a lot, talking a lot about relationships and sex, flirts with jokes about kissing, massaging, f***ing, eating, or marrying you, or stares at your boobs and/or a** a lot.
Though the last one isn't an accurate sign. We'll stare at any girl's boobs and a** that comes into our line of sight. =P
Those are the signs, but you have to ask directly in order to confirm it, but you should think carefully before asking. When you ask a guy if he's interested it translates into "Do you want to have a sexual relationship with me?" once the words make their way through the ears and into our brains. You need to make sure 1) he's straight and single, 2) you need to be sure you want to get into a relationship that will lead to sex, and 3) that your ready to hear him say "no" or "I don't think of you that way", assuming of course you want him to be interested in you.

Watch the signs. Does he smile at you, stare at you, search you out to be near you? If he does these things, but is to shy to make a move, then ask him if he'd like to get a cup of coffee with you. Good luck.

You could take the initiative and ask him. It would ease some of his tension and he would like it, trust me. Also, if you want to know if he's really interested, why don't you wait for him to ask you out or something, just drop little hints when you are with him.

I assume you only care to know if he likes you because you like him?
If this is the case, tell him you like him, and see where he stands. There is no rule to what sign means what anymore. You just have to communicate, be honest, and go after what you want if you think there is a possibility the feelings are reciprocated.

They're are lots of signs that he likes you, like complimenting you, staring at you, etc. And if you're still unsure if he likes you, just ask him; it's not like it's a huge ordeal.
