It depends on the personality of the cat. If it's a fairly submissive one, you and any other household members should show the cat that you are claiming the furniture. Give a little hiss or some other sharp noise like clapping your hands if the cat still tries to get on the furniture. For a more dominant cat it will be a bit more difficult but if you stick with it and make sure not to allow the cat on the piece of furniture it will soon learn that it's unacceptable. The key is to instill the thought that it is not the cat's territory early on but be calm about asserting yourself. If you're just flustered or angry the cat will sense that. As with any animal it can sense assertiveness and knows in an instant who's boss.

My six cats have their "cat furniture" to scratch on. When I get a new piece of furniture I get the Sticky Paws strips from the pet store and put them on the ends of the furniture where the cats like to scratch. They are pretty much invisible and you can take them off in a few months. A package is only around $10.

Cats seem to dislike citrus. I have placed orange peels under the furniture cushions and it has kept my cats off of the furniture.

There is a pet training aid spray in the pet section at Walmart. It has a purple lid. Works well at Christmas also with all your breakable items. It has an odor that deters them from going there. You may not like it either, but after the animal is trained you can always use Febreeze.

Use a squirt gun or water bottle with a sprayer. It's humane, but cats hate it. It worked for me. Well, not really, he still sleeps on the couch when we aren't around! Cats are funny that way.
