First use a non-used gallon paint can, so it will seal very well.
Put in home baked cookies and candies, dried fruit, jerky, and pack the remainder with pop corn to keep things from breaking in the rough mail handling.

Stuff to keep him busy like games, mp3 players, etc. Food that won't go bad on the trip over and stuff he can make easily. Easy Mac and Betty Crocker Warm Delights are a big hit. Love letters and pictures, maybe a video message (if he has access to a t.v and video player).
If you're a g/f, fiancee or wife, I suggest joining a Yahoo group aimed at military wives, etc. They are so helpful and what got me through bootcamp, MOS, 2 years in Japan and a deployment to Iraq. Also, you can e-mail me anytime. Lots of luck!!

Pictures. The thing he wants the most is to see and hear what's going on at home. Have everyone he knows write him a letter to include in the box. Letters with news about everything going on. Things from your area that are hard to find...when I was in Germany I missed a certain type of tartar sauce that can only be found on the West Coast (silly, I know...but it was AWESOME!). If your area is famous for something that isn't found elsewhere...send some of it.
As far as other items, he can get pretty much everything he needs at the PX on his base...you can go on the aafes website (www.aafes.com) and buy him a gift certificate to get what he needs...and if he isn't close to a PX he can buy what he needs online and have it shipped to himself. Takes the mystery right out of gift buying for a soldier! :-)
Good luck~

Send him anything that you think would make him feel at home but DO NOT SEND UNDERWEAR a lot of people don't know that at every base in Iraq their is a Px/BX so this is something we can get for our selves mostly send letters and junk food. it's so much what is in the box but the fact that someone cares enough to send us something that makes our day.You know every one like getting boxes in the mail.

Send your favorite canned foods, recent copies of American magazines( but none of the so called news magazines that are against Bush and what we are doing in Iraq), and most of all tell them you love them all and thank them for protecting our freedom and trying to give the Iraqi a chance for the freedom we have here.

Coming from a military guy. You should send some things that remind him of home. Some beef jerkey, home town newspaper so he can catch up on high school sports, pictures of course, anything that would remind him of you.

Foods -non perishables like granola bars, tuna and crackers kits, trail mix, pringles. Check if he has access to a microwave and then you can send him things like popcorn and easy mac.
Drink mixes - gatorade, tea, kool aid. When my DH was there the water tasted really bad and he wanted anything to make it taste better.
Fun items - handheld electronic games and batteries, deck of cards,
Hygeine items - soap, shampoo, baby wipes, sunscreen
Do NOT send anything including pork, alcohol or adult material and for shipping reasons aerosol cans.
Here's a good website, it has APO restrictions and ideas:
