Christening is a ritual used to cement the family into the stream of delusional superstitious belief. Like all religious ritual, it is meaningless, there are no such things as gods.

People are christened at birth to ensure union with the Church as sons and daughters of GOD. Just as parents are already ( or should be) members in God's family.

I'm going to TRY to explain what Christians believe. The new Christian name signifies a new identity in Christ as a member of His church. That's why we take a saint's name, because it must be a Christian name. Now we are members of The Body of Christ ie: His Church. Because of the first sin,ORIGINAL SIN, of Adam & Eve we were excluded from being able to get into heaven when we died. (They were "cast out" of Eden -a metaphor for the same concept) That is called Original Sin. Now, God sends His only begotten son, Jesus, the Christ,(meaning Savior) to make AT-ONE-MENT (atonement) for the original sin, so we can enter heaven when we die. We get baptized as CHRISTians and take a new name to signify that we are re-born (born again). We are born again "in Christ" -cleansed of original sin. Now we become a member of the Christian faith and the Church. I hope this helps a little bit. You can get some books in the library to find out what you really want to know. God Bless You!

It's a ritual. Just like the Jews crush a glass when getting married, and Muslims don't eat pork.
