Many stores decide to choose music that will either relax their customers and make it easier to shop (for the older crowd) and other stores choose music that is more upbeat and recognizable, which puts the younger crowd in a better mood. Have you ever been in a store without music, or when it stopped playing for awhile? It is kind of boring. The music makes the atmosphere more enjoyable, thus keeping more people in the store. This increases the chances of them making purchases. Hope this helps!

Stores also use music to control the amount of time customers spend in their stores. Grocery stores are most notable for doing this. During 9-5 they play casual calm music to keep people wandering through the store, but after 5 they play more upbeat music to get people moving. After 5 in a grocery store is comparable to rush hour and they want customers to move in and move out as fast as possible.
