sometimes it's easy and sometimes it's not. If you were friends for a long time before becoming boyfriend and girlfriend, then it hurts in the long run because the friendship can not go back to where it was. If you still want him as a friend and you didn't have the long friendship, then you can probably have that friendship with him after the breakup...

Unfortuately most men don't know how to be just "friends" with a woman. Most men if they are interested in a woman, it's because they ultimately want an intimate relationship with her at some point. Letting him down won't be easy, yet tell him simply, "...let's be friends. I don't want to ruin our friendship over a relationship." If he can't accept that, then at least you got that off your chest... MOVE ON, he'll get over it.

There is no easy way, unless he wants to break up too. Sorry...
If you break up with him, and he loves you, it will not be fair for you to try to be friends with him. He will never see you two as just friends, no matter what he tells you.
Either try to improve the relationship, or make a clean break.

Well... to be honest.... i'm looking for the same thing you are..... but my friend and i have been trying to figure it out all weekend, and we've decided the best thing is to say that he is a good friend but you dont like him that way RIGHT NOW. i think that may be the only "nice" way to do it.... but i still feel horrible and i havent even talked about it yet..

you are dumping him but you still want to be friends.
from the guys perspective here is what many of us think.
(sorry if this sounds harsh)
she is dumping me for someone else. but she still wants the security of a fall back guy. that is why she still wants to be firends. she really does not give a damn about me. she just wants the fall back guy,,,or she wants to feel like she is a good person and is being nce to me. either way i have better things to do than to play her games...
in short you do not dump someone without hurting their feelings.
why try.

Try saying "look, I think you're sweet and wonderful, but I think I like you butter as a friend." than add on "and there are lots of other girls that will go out with you."

It seldom works. If he is in love, it will hurt him too much to be just friends. You can tell him that you want to be friends, but don't expect it to happen.

Tell him that you just want to be friends and if he is a good guy he'll understand.
