Wash it once a week and deep condition it every other week, where you put the conditioner on,put a plastic cap on her/his head and let them sit under a dryer for 10min. But water is required in order for african/american hair to grow. Use a moisturizer daily that is not too heavy or not too light. Try a little pink oil moisturizer daily. And braids help also, not too tight though. My daughter had hair is patches when she was a baby now she is 5 and hair is down her neck, it's coarse but soft. Good Luck

What type of "ethnic" hair are you discussing?
Everyone's hair is based on their ethnic background.
Just remember, everyone looks good the way they came naturally. By letting a kid know that their hair, skin, teeth, whatever do not look good will only hurt their self esteem.
Run a comb or brush through the kid's hair and it will be fine.

I'm caucasian, so maybe I shouldn't answer this question. I'm assuming you mean African-American hair, and I don't know anything about what's required to take care of hair of that texture.
However, I have yet to see a little kid who didn't look cute, regardless of the texture of his/her hair or how it's styled. So my guess is whatever you do, it's going to be fine.
