Word perfect and Microsoft Word are basically the same TYPE of program in that they are both basically a word processing program. Word perfect has fewer bells and whistle than Microsoft Word and is setup to be used to create documents with primarily just words. Microsoft Word is part of the office suite and integrates other types of files into it by allowing pictures, spreadsheets, and even animations to be added to it, so it comes down to what you can afford and what you need the program to do.

Word perfect is still available, but nearly dead. It once was the best selling word processing program back in the early 90's, but Microsoft targeted it and pretty much killed it. It doesn't help that Corel, which bough WP from Novell, doesn't seem to know what it is doing.
There are cheap options to get Word and it is what everyone knows. If you use your friend's computer, in all likelihood your friend will have Word, whether they have Windows or a Mac.
Go with Word.

I would say for school and many businesses, word is more popular. However, legal offices tend to use word perfect more because it is more compatible with that type of work.

They are similar type programs, but by different companies.
Microsoft Word is used more often in offices. My experience has shown you're better off using that.

They're both used for the same purpose, but no, they're not the same programs. M. Word is more popular. In my opinion, neither is best. Both are annoying, if you ask me. I prefer OpenOffice Writer. Much better.

Same TYPE of program, but from different companies.
WP tends to be cheaper. "Best" depends on personal preference.
