There are different styles of translation. The NASB is the most literal word-for-word translation available in the English language although not entirely word-for-word. The NIV is a phrase-for-phrase translation(also called a thought-for-thought translation). The KJV and NKJV are more literal than the NIV and have a good devotional quality to them. Modern translations such as the NASB, NKJV, and NIV use the best available manuscripts, many of which were not available to the KJV translators in 1611. One such important manuscript discovery is the Dead Sea Scrolls which were not discovered until 1949. The Dead Sea Scrolls contain many books of the Old Testament including a complete Isaiah and are 1,100 years older than the Masoretic Text that was available to the KJV translators. The older the manuscript, the closer to the originals. www.equip.org

Check out any of the devotionals or books by A.W.Tozer. Excellent insights, and for use with the KJV.
Dwight L. Moody's are good too.
