Salvation Army. Call and ask about an Angel Tree in your area. You can "adopt" a child (or 2) and get them what they want for Christmas. Just look in your phone book for the phone number.

I have given to children charity's all my life. I found out that some of the ones that I had donated to in the past where bogus. I was very upset about this. Instead of sending money to charity's I started doing something for the community around me. This year is the only year I cannot do it do to some family issues with me but in the past I have seen it very benificial to start with your own home town. Find places in your neighbor that do food closets and deliver the items yourself. Any clothes that you or your children have outgrown also check with friends, family and neighbors of old clothes, jackets, socks, sweaters, toys, stuffed animals, and food that no one needs bring to your local food bank/closet. I know that my local food bank is called "The Lords Cubboard" its a small whol in the wall place, but they help so many people... including myself from time to time. Give backto yoru community... and what is really nice that I loved to do before I got sick and pregnant was I would take one family that had kids, and bring them into myhouse and feed them, they would get to spend the night, take showers, the kids would play with my animals and with the Christmas tree, and I wouldnt have much to give to them, but I sent them off with stockings for their kids, full tummys, clean clothes and clean bodies... The smiles that you get are untouchable as to any present that you could ever possibly receive on Christmas.

If you plan on doing that, for your own saftey, never invite a family to your home if you are a single female. Invite some of your friends over... it will be a nice get together. Your old friends and new ones. This way as your doing a good deed, your also being protected ;)

The angel tree is where you pick a tag and buy that gift for that little one. You might call some churches to see if they have any children in their church who won't have a good Christmas. A lot of times stores have big boxes that you can buy something for a child and put it in there. Try the Fire Department, call Human Resources or an Abuse Center in your area. God Bless you for wanting to help the needy children.

Easter Seals is an organization that provides services to children and in some areas adults too with disabilities. There are Easter Seals throughout, with each individual Easter Seals serving their own communities, yet all striving for the same goal- to help those with disabilities become productive members of their communities. I have in the past contacted my local Easter Seals and adopted a family for Christmas- it is such a wonderful experience and the families are just wonderful. Each Easter Seals that I have the fortune to interact with provides services to those in their communities so you would know where exactly your donations are being used. And most Easter Seals can always use volunteers throughout the year for different programs and fundraisers- Easter Seals is a not-for-profit organization that strives to help those with special needs in their community lead full and productive lives. I believe it is definitely worth you and your friends looking into.

I was wondering this myself. I have decided to be my own charity.

If you do not do it yourself the ones you are trying to comfort will not get 100%.

Even the almighty Salvation Army takes a bit off the sides. Check on what percentages go to the charity, or if they charge a so called minimal fee or do they actually just give your gift out right to the ones in need.

I have to say that The Salvation Army is a good one to donate to. They helped me when I was in a very poor spot, and never asked anything in return. The Red Cross, on the other hand, charges people for assistance, which is pretty lousy.

Toys for Tots! This charity donates toys to children who have family that can't provide toys galore on x-mas.

Toys for Tots is a good organization. All you do is buy a toy and drop it off in one of those little red sleighs in Wal-mart. Or is it non-existent in your area...
