it means the emissions are too high and unburnt fuel is going through the exhaust, im gonna have a guess that its running a bit lumpy too? If it is the one of the 4 ignition coils (that make the spark to burn the fuel) is faulty and will need replacing. If u fancy doing it yourself just buy one and replace each one in turn untill the car runs ok, only one bolt holds each one in. The light will go out once its running ok.

It means that the engine management has discovered a fault with the emissions system.

To find out exactly what the fault is, you'll need to find a workshop with the correct diagnostic equipment (either a Renault dealer, or a good independent, or one of the major chains like the AA at Halfords). Only then will you be able to have any idea what the cost will be. It could be a loose connection on a sensor, that will take a few seconds and no parts to fix, or it could be a failed catalytic converter that will cost a few hundred pounds.

Check first the catalytic converter sensors, then reprogram the engine computer. It might be a false alert. Make sure your electric wiring is fault-free.
