Clinically dead means you have no vital signs. Legally dead -to receive a death certificate- is diagnosed as being brain dead-no brain activity- by a qualified physician

A correspondent once told me that he had survived a suicide attempt after having been "clinically dead for several minutes!" (exclamation mark his).

Altavista advanced search (exact phrase) clinical death

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinical_death

Clinical death occurs when the heartbeat and breathing have stopped.

The reversal of clinical death is sometimes possible through cardiopulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation, epinephrine injection, and other treatments. Resuscitation after more than 4 to 6 minutes of clinical death at normal body temperature is difficult. Usually brain damage or later brain death results after 10 to 15 minutes even if cardiac resuscitation is successful. Longer intervals of clinical death can be survived under conditions of hypothermia. Hypothermia also improves outcomes after resuscitation from clinical death even if body temperature is not lowered until after resuscitation.

R. Phenix (correspondent; that really is his last name) was quite fortunate, as emergency personnel see a lot of accident cases and don't exactly bust their butts to save someone who has put himself in mortal danger on purpose. Perhaps with mental-health parity legislation, they will come to see this differently.
