Would love one for Christmas, but I've gotta find one that is within a price range that can be afforded by my in-laws

Do you want digital or film ? either way I would choose a Cannon ,they always seem to get the best revues , also you will find accessories easier to locate....

I guess that would depend on what you mean by a low price. And I assume you are talking digital.

When you get into the digital SLR cameras, the price starts going up fast. The new Nikon D40 (replaces the D50) will probably be around $500, but won't be available until after Christmas or in very short supply. The new D80 is around $900 body only, $1200 with lens.

Canon Digital Rebel is around $900 and a good camera also.

what price range exactly? With it you need to get a memory card, if you want an extra battery, and a case...so, are they buying that or are you? You definitely need a memory card. The Canon Rebel XT has been going down in price ever since the Rebel XTi came out. The XTi is similar but 10 megapixels instead of 8 and has the same processor as the Canon 30D which is faster. It also has a dust deletion system which is kinda neat. The Rebel XT is like $700ish the Xti is like $100 more...SLR's are expensive. Ask for a giftcard and then have them just pay for part of it. By the time you get everything you need for it, you will be walking out of the store with close to $1000 worth of stuff.

Get a Nikon D50. It has a few "consumer friendly" automatic modes that make it very easy to use, but still offers total photographic control when you are ready to take charge. The "kit" lens is a decent lens optically, but you might want to upgrade to the Nikkor AF-S 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G ED DX lens for a bit more range and a lot more durability. I guess you wouldn't do that, though since you are trying to come in under budget. When you are ready to add lenses, the sky is the limit with Nikon. Personally, I would choose this over the D40, which is still not really available and somewhat of an unknown quantity for not very much less in price.

Get a 1 GB memory card, such as the Sandisk "Ultra" for decent write speed.

Circuit City has it for $700, with the lens.

Walmart has it for $660.

The memory card will cost $50-60 or so, depending on sales or rebates.

I would say the D40 or the D50 by Nikon - Good camera, good price, feature packed. The Canon DSLR's tend to have shoddy construction (ie. they are not as durable). Pick up a Canon and then pick up a Nikon and you can tell the difference.
