I'm looking to maybe get my boyfriend a 12 gauge shotgun for xmas because he has always wanted to go hunting. Also, if I can't afford one, I was looking to get a toy gun that looks real but isn't. Does anyone sell stuff like that?

Combat shotgun?*&^%! For hunting? Uh, Nooooooo!

Anyway, if your buying a first time shotgun for a guy who may or may not like hunting, I think there are several things to take into consideration. All these things will determine price.
A shotgun is used primarily for small game hunting, turkey, pheasants, squirrel, grouse, rabbit, dove etc...In many areas of over developed housing and lack of woodlands or fields the shotgun is also loaded with a rifle slug for deer hunting. The reason is, the rifle, even a small caliber like a .22, can carry it's projectile a average of 1-1/2-2miles, dangerous in a area that contains any type of housing or dwelling in a 4 sq. mile area. If the 12 gauge is going to be used for both deer and small game that could affect price. You can buy the gun with 2 different barrels, one to direct a small game load of different size shot/ the other a large rifled projectile (rifle slug). The rifle slug does not have the distance a actual rifle would have, thus makes it safer, it only travels 200ish yards.
You really have to give a little more info as to what type of game he will be hunting.

The shotgun comes in many varied styles, this is mostly for convience and ease of use.
-Single- it is a shotgun you can load a single shoit in at a time. To get more than one shot off you have to be pretty ambidextorous or the pray has to darn near be a turltle or really , really old(in which case save the bullet and wait for the darn thing to ide naturally.
-Double barrel- comes in side by side or over and under. These start at around $200- up to thousands of denero! They are prefered by alot of sportsman. Yet you only get 2 shots, my opinion is, if you need more than 2 shots...take up fishing or golf.
-Pump - the pump shotgun is one of the most sold and obviously sought after choices of weapon. It houses the most shells that can be extracted by a pump or slide at the forarm of the gun. Chances are you seen em' in the movies, you know that famous shhhhhhhh -click*click sound like in Terminator. Lets face it I don't know who you are but that there alone makes it the coolest!
Most practical too. They also run $180 on average, and up.

Semi automatic- holds as many shells as a pump 3 or more. You fill it up and fire one at a time as fast as you can squeeze off the trigger. This is a luxury gun, many hunters prefer them but can't afford em, sometimes they do have problems ejecting the shells due to shell sizing temperature and manufacturer, so due to this some people won't use em'.
There are also bolt action types for goos or turkey that hold a clip. They are obviously specifically restricted to that game being they are usually for still hunting and the barrel is longer than a day at a Catholic wedding.

Check Cabelas if you have one near for used guns or any gun shop. Most hunters take better care of their weapons than they would their kid, so used isn't a factor, plus you might get a better brand. Walmart also carries guns at very reasonable prices. The newspaper want ads are a great way to search too!
Good luck to ya! In summary, I would SHOOT for the pump action shotgun, deer to the dove.

If you just want to find out what prices are, go to a local gun shop. Wal-Mart might have guns, but I think most of them are getting out of the gun selling business. I bought a cheap Mossberg at Wal-Mart, a few years ago, and it was $150. A few months later, I saw the exact same model, at Cabela's on the used gun rack, for $199.

you can find one at a local pawn shop for under $200 or under $400 for a good pump shotgun. hard to go wrong with a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500.

500 to 1200 dollars. 250 if you go discount. That's for the average 7 shot. If you go with the Combat shotgun, like Spas 12 which I believe are illegal they might cost a little higher
