If you are truly interested in assisting a low income family for the holiday, why not try a local church in your area? They may be sponsoring something that will help bring a smile to the faces of a needy family for the holiday. I find that while charities are good, and good to contribute too, but they don't really minister to the needs of the neighborhoods. You can sponsor a local family in a local neighborhood, and don't have to worry about if or when your contribution will be received.

The Salvation Army is an excellent resource for low income families. They give out boxes of food, clothing, certificates for shoes, and boxes of new toys to each family that applies.
