There are about 180 John O'brien in the Family Search site that could be John. I am sure there are even more O'brien family members. Check that site for Pedigree files, they would be full of information if there are any.

I have been doing family research for years and so advise you look at the census for 18311841/1851. There are several sites you can use, some free like "freebmd" There is also ancestry.com which is excellent. So services on there are free. Also try familysearch and britishorigins. Family search is free and britishorigins is very reasonable. You could also try your local archives if the family were in your area. Archives usually like you to book a session. The service is usually free. Good luck!
