Red wine vinegar Notes: This assertive vinegar is a staple in French households. It's used in vinaigrettes and for making marinades, stews, and sauces. It's a good choice if you're trying to balance strong flavors in a hearty dish.

Substitutes: white wine vinegar (very similar) OR balsamic vinegar OR sherry vinegar OR apple cider vinegar OR rice vinegar

I would use cider vinegar for the amount of vinegar called for, and if you think the flavor of red wine is crucial to the dish you're making, then add an equal amount of red wine to the recipe. That'll give you the best of both worlds, epicure-wise. Good Eating!!!

Almost anything acidic.

Any other vinegar, lemon juice, orange juice, tangerine juice. Sometimes even a bit of dry white wine can be pressed into service!

There are only a few things that will just be ruined without wine vinegar.

Best wishes!

I susually use balsamic vinegar instead of red wine vinegar. It has a much better flavor in my opinion.

I've used balsamic before with good results. Otherwise, white or cider vinegar.

It really depends on what you are making. I would say cider vinegar is probably the closest you are going to get tastewise.
