you need to put her in a cage at night with a blanket or something of yours with your smell on it. She'll get over it in about 2-3 wks...also try using a small stuffed animal beside her.

what sort of scumbag breeder lets a puppy go at 4 weeks. What sort of one lets a puppy go on a trial basis for god's sake??? If you never had a puppy before, why on earth didn't you come here FIRST and ask so that people would have been able to tell you NOT to get such a young pup from a backyard breeder. You can't just take one, then take it back, then go and get it again later on. These are living creatures you know. The breeder lied to you by telling you that it was eating by itself at this young age and not sleeping with the mother.
You have done everything wrong and I can only hope and pray that this baby and the rest of the litter, actually survive.
This question has made me ripping mad.I would like to slap the breeder and shake some sense into the questioner grrrrrr.
Those poor poor puppies.

for the first few weeks (or even months) in a new home, a puppy will whine at night. While she is still young, its best not to ignore her. try letting her sleep in your room in her own crate or bed - some dogs are comforted knowing someone else is in the room because they're not used to being alone. also, you may need to play with her for 45 mins to an hour before bedtime to get her worn out and take her out so she'll sleep (more or less) through the night. or, find a room or space for just her, with plenty of water, some light (such as nightlight) and warmth and let her sleep there. give all these a shot and try each for at least a week- so she has time to get used to it- but if it still doesnt work, consult a vet. hope i was helpful!:)

Get her a crate with a blanket and a stuffed animal (as someone else suggested.) Get one that has adjustable size and then you want to always keep it big enough so that she has enough room to be comfortable, but not much bigger than her. This will help to house break her, since she won't want to dirty where she sleeps.

She's going to whine and cry all night for a little while no matter what. You might have to sleep in the room with her for a few nights so she won't be scared. Good luck. :)

And for future reference, you don't usually want to take an animal away from its mother until it is 8 weeks.

I also had that problem with my puppy for the first night....and we got her when she was 8 weeks old. She is just not used to being away from her mother and is a little scared. Small puppies need to be taken out a lot. They should start to begin making it all night as late as 6 months. A good rule of thumb is the months they are old plus one is the number of half hour periods they can go without having to be taken out...so take her out more. Some ways to comfort her would be to lie next to her kennel (she should sleep in her kennel,) and put your finger in. Another idea would be to ask the breeder to have the mother sleep on a cloth for a night or two and give it to you to put in her crate. That way she has her mother's scent. Also, make sure you have tired her out before she goes to bed. As far as the no sleeping goes....I know how you feel....it happened to me too!

4 weeks is way to young to take them away from Mom and siblings; she is just starting to eat on her own at this time; why would anyone let you take the pup so young, she a tiny baby and is whining b/c of the loss of her Mom and pups and hasn't even had the opportunity to learn and play with them; it is irresponsible for someone to have allowed the pup to leave this early; notwithstanding that; she is whining and looking to play b/c that is what she would be doing there ; you will now have to replace the Mom; if you can get something from Mom and siblings with scent; put that in the crate , rolled up towel, stuffed animal with scent on it , tucked in it; keep her in a warm place b/c she would be cuddling with her siblings for warmth and comfort; a pup at 4 weeks is just starting training on a limited scale; a wind up clock wrapped in towel can help simulate a heartbeat of the mom and/or siblings; you feed her 3- 4 times a day , small portions, dry, moisten food; don't feed her at night; breakfast, lunch , dinner, light meal later; water at all times, play, chew toys, stuffed animal , large rawhide so she won't break off pieces; discard when it gets to look like it is getting soft; take her to a vet to start on dewormer and shots for her health and well being; at 4 weeks, if she went to the bathroom, her Mom would have licked it up so don't be surprise if there are surprises in the crate; people saying that they won't poop where they sleep have never had a puppy this young and don't know that the Mom eats the feces and cleans the urine so there would be no mess in the den. She may mess and that is to be expected at only 4 weeks old; she would be learning to follow Mom and siblings outside to go ; the job is now yours to train; it can be done with time, patience and understanding; no hitting, shaking , sticking nose in it ; can't correct for the past;only try to correct future mistakes but with this one so young, it may take some time. good luck

A puppy will usually bark and whine even when its old enough to go home. My solution was to stay close to it the first few nights, and start talking to it when it barked. If it keeps going on, you could get a bark collar. The electric ones sound bad, but there is also another kind that releases an icky smell to the dogs. After a while, the dog should stop barking.

Who was the idiot who allowed you to take your puppy home to begin with??? I am that crazy lady with 8 Shih-Tzu's and I tell you it killed me to have to pick my first one up at 6 weeks old but she would have been gone if I hadn't. That was before I knew anybetter. I now buy my guys from reputable AKC.CKC Breeders people who not only breed but spend their life either training or showing their dogs. These people want nothing but the best puppy homes for the puppies that aren't kept for show. And they normall won't let them go before they are 12 weeks of age. This gives the puppy time to develop his or her personality and also to feel ready to leave mommy and his litter mates. These guys do have distinct personalities. Not one are the same, and this makes finding just the right home so important. Bring that puppy back now, and really think about this person you have purchased this pup from. Sounds to me like a very unetical and uncaring person. She should be reported. Also maybe you should check into this breed. These dogs need love all the time, they hate being alone. They follow you to the bathroom , they follow you everywhere. Are you prepared to go upstairs for something only to forget something and then realize that your dog is also going right back up those stairs with you. You better love it. !!!. Be prepared because they are also very smart and they won't let you neglect them. They will tell you when they want something. And if you have upset them, well have you ever had a dog come and turn his back on you? I take mine everywhere with me, they want to be with me 24/7 and they love walks, car rides, playtime, training time, bath time. Ah mostly after bath time when they know they are the most beautiful. Are you prepared to bath these dogs . They need it at least once every two weeks. And since yours is a mixed breed and you won't be showing it. It will have to be cut down .This needs to be done seveal times a year. Can you afford it? And their nails need to be cut on a regular basis and their ears need to be cleaned. If you yourself have brought this little fellow home on a trial basis, it sounds to me like you yourself aren't ready for especially this breed, and just maybe not ready for any puppy. Do your research!!! I also have a regular sitter when I can't take them with me. Those days when I know I can't leave the engine running to keep them warm. Or the days when even going into the store for 5 min, might result in the unthinkable. Please think about what you are doing.

Your puppy misses her mother. To solve this, lay your puppy on a soft, comfy blanket that represents the mom's coat (like a fur jacket or blanket) and put a small alarm clock that ticks softly. The ticking of the clock will remind your sleeping puppy of it's mother's heart beat. This will make your puppy feel safe and secure! Good luck!

You aren't suppose to place your puppies into another home until after 8 or 9 weeks; 9 weeks to be on the safe side.
