Actually in Genesis it doesn't say what kind of fruit, it just says fruit. It wasn't that important to God to label the fruit and who know if we would even recognize the fruit since the Garden of Eden disappeared in "The Flood". I don't think it was a typical fruit like an apple because there was only one tree that was like it in all of history.

No, I don't. I've heard that it was an apple, but I've also heard that it wasn't an apple. I'm thinking pomegranate for some reason.
But it probably wasn't an actual fruit at all. The Genesis story is not an eye-witness account no matter how you look at it. The most liberal interpretation is that it was written down by Moses, dictated by God. It could very well be a metaphoric or figurative story about humankind seeking the knowledge of good and evil against the advice of God. The forbidden fruit would therefore mean knowledge.
But what do I know.

"anyone" has answered this correctly with "pomegranate". It is more than likely this fruit because it grew in that region. However the Bible never states what the fruit is. As far as why it is no longer forbidden, that is an excellent question! Here is my best guess: The Bible says that Jesus fulfilled the law (the Old Testament covenant) and the New Testament says that all food is good for eating. (Read in Acts where Peter had a vision.)

The Bible (King James version) does not specify the type of fruit, only that it was forbidden to eat or even touch it.

Many people say it was an apple, but nothing in the Bible indicates that it was an apple or any other particular fruit, other than it was forbidden and in the midst of the garden.

The standard knowledge 'forbidden fruit' was the apple. But, you knew that. But, if it's debatable (as some do) as to what the real forbidden fruit was...my thought is...what does it matter. The real message was "I told you not to do something and you did". There are many 'forbidden fruits' in day to day life's . . . stealing, cheating on lover, lying, temptation of any form that would lead to discord . . . etc. A person's mind / soul / intuition / gut feeling tell messages to us not to do something and we might make a choice to go against that intuition and do it anyway...problems occur. The knowledge of what the actual fruit was is not of importance...it's the message of listening to the truth of voice or not. We hear 'messages' and we have free will of choices.

An apple, from the tree of knowledge. (That's why teachers are associated with apples, at least in America.) When they ate it they realized they were naked and covered themselves with fig leaves. It is no longer forbidden because once Adam and Eve had the knowledge they taught it to future generations.

The forbidden fruit is a symbol for ADULTERY. Satan was a man who like a snake tempted Eve into adultery. Abel was the fruit of that adultery and this is the real reason for the killing amoungst the half-brothers. Adultery is not evil but wrong, because it can lead to evil/killing/hatred. The church turned Satan into a snake to blame women for the fall. And because they slept with others they felt ashamed. Adultery is still NOT allowed by Gods law, but who cares now adays. Sleeping around seems to be more fun then living according to the 10 commantments.

whatever that fruit was, it definitely was the most expensive piece of fruit in history! Its bought already so eat up :-)

* the reason the kind of fruit isn't mentioned is because it is irrelevant...and God didn't just curse Adam and Eve for eating the fruit, He cursed all of mankind. Thats why its no longer forbidden to eat...we pay to the death for it

We do not know what the fruit was. The tree is not here so there is no danger. That is why Adam and Eve were not allowed back in the garden and it was guarded by and angel.

It has often been called an apple, but other suggestions include grapes and figs (among others). I've even heard a banana. This is the current "Straight Dope" column of the week. See below for more:
