Airhitch works well but only under certain circumstances. Basically Airhitch has a contract with certain airlines where they buy empty seats last-minute and fill them with Airhitch travellers. You can get some really great discounts BUT you need to have a lot of patience, flexibility, and nowhere you have to be at a certain time.

When you buy an Airhitch voucher, there's no guarantee you will actually get a seat on a flight on your preferred day. You basically show up at the airport as early as you can and wait to see if there's empty seats on the plane. If there are, you can trade your Airhitch voucher for a boarding pass and get on the plane. If there's no empty seats it's back to the waiting area with you, and sometimes the wait can be very very long. You also have little/no control over what destination will have space for you; if you show up in New York and are trying to get to London, you might not be able to get an empty seat on a London flight and end up in Glasgow instead.

Airhitch does not work if you aren't near a major International airport--- for example, there's hardly any International flights in and out of DC's Washington National; you usually have to go to Dulless or connect through Philly/NY/Charlotte. So Airhitch would be pretty worthless from this airport; you'd have to pay your own way to the International hub.

Airhitch doesn't work if you want to check bags, because you might not be assigned a seat till 20-30 minutes before takeoff and that's too late to have your bags loaded in the cargo area.

Airhitch doesn't work if you need to be somewhere on a particular day because there's no guarantee that you'll get a flight on any particular day.

And Airhitch doesn't work if you don't have a decent budget for food and hotel/hostel. Since you don't know when you'll get a flight, you might end up spending 3 or 4 extra days in London and if you can't pay for a hotel, you're stuck in the airport.

Airhitch is great if you want to see a lot of different places for cheap and don't really care where or when you go; just show up at the airport and jump on the first available flight.

If you do decide to go the Airhitch way, make sure you check seasonal availability before making any plans. Transatlantic flights during the summer rarely if ever have empty seats so you might get stranded for many, many days, but in the winter your chances are much better.
