My bf and I adopted a 2.5 yr old male cat around the start of September. We adore him, but he has this habit of biting you when you pet him. I don't believe in hitting animals, so what's a good way to get him to stop biting us? Also, is there any trick to get him to let us cut his nails? My cat in Oklahoma (long story, I had to leave him with my parents after I moved because pet movers cancelled on me), always let me cut his nails, but this cat acts like he's dying and gets spastic.

The cat wasn't abused as a kitten. I adopted him from a woman who had to give him up because she was having a baby and her apartment was small (and her husband didn't want the responsibility of taking care of the cat and their new son). This is the first cat the lady ever had, so she had no idea how to train him to get his nails cut when he was a kitten (she had him since 8 weeks).

My kitty still bites me. I say "No" loudly and open her mouth with my other hand (without hitting or grabbing hard) and stop playing or petting her. I usually keep her toy next to me so I can distract her and put it by her mouth when she bites. Lately, I found a way to clip her nails without being bitten - take a large bath towel and wrap it around him so he's snug (not too tight or he'll moan), then quickly clip the 2 paws and feet - it works as long as you're quick. My kitty struggles a little then waits it out until I'm done - then I give her kisses and praise! Good luck :-)

There isn't any surefire way to stop a cat that old from not biting. It apparently is a holdover from some kind of abuse early in life but with patience and gentleness you might get him to stop. also the nail thing is not a lot different and should be something that starts as a kitten. Good luck in both cases

When my cat would bite I would press his tongue down to the bottom of his mouth (NOT HARD!) It didn't hurt him but he got sick of me doing it so he quit biting!
