Why do we park in the driveway, and drive in the parkway. Why does our nose run, and our feet smell?

The list is long and interesting, but I'm too exhausted to think. A pity as I love exploring the English language. All languages are like that. In French, ones say's there is no lizard = there's no problem. He doesn't rain cats and dogs in French, but rains like a cow pissing. But hey, I'm sorry, must sleep, otherwise I'd be here all night adding stuff and I already have square eyes. But I really liked what you wrote.

For those that say.."but I have bent over backwards to help X" how can you do that, when going so far over, you would just end up silly and fall flat on your backside?
or most irritating..."for those of us, that live in the real world", so what other worlds are there exacly ?

Actually there's a very good book on the subject, called "The metaphors we live by". I highly recommend it. It makes you think about how else could we say things and it's funny.
