Ok this is going to sound stupid, but I have to ask....I have a German Shepard/Yellow Lab mix, and I am going to get another dog within the next 6 months. He seems to get along with other dogs, and I haven't seen any aggressive behavior in him. My question about this...are there certain breeds of dogs that do not get along with other dogs of different breeds, or their own? He seems to get along with any dog, but I want to get a smaller dog next time I adopt. I assume when I find another dog I should introduce the two before bringing him/her home am I on the right track here? I know some dogs are more hyperactive and so on, so what would be a good match?

Some breeds prefer to be the only dog.
Pitt Bulls, Dobermans, some of the terriers, Akitas, some of the other large assertive breeds.
They do best if in male/female pairs. Fix both dogs and that is the best combo for any breeds.
Intorduce on neutral territory and never leave alone when not supervised for the first few weeks.
Feed seperately and have plently of sleeping space for both dogs.
Look for something similar in size does not have to be the same size but not a huge dog and a very tiny one. Look for similar activity levels so they can play together.

Not a stupid question at all. But do you have a breed in mind you are looking to adopt? What you should understand is that most breeds of dogs get along with other dogs, it is usually the way they are trained, raised and treated which will determine a dogs behavior. But knowing what breed you are interested in will help you determine their quirky behaviors, because each breed has it's own quirky behaviors and temperament they where bred for.

You're already on the right track, if you're looking to adopt the best thing you can do is bring your current dog with you to meet the dog you are interested in on neutral grounds. What kind of socializing have you done with your dog? If you've taken him to dog parks, pet stores and other public places to socialize him with other dogs you should be just fine.

When choosing a breed(mixed breed) keep in mind what you are looking for. If you do a lot of walking, jogging, hiking, swimming, ect... you will do fine with a dog that requires a lot of exercise(ie. Boxers, Jack Russel terriers, any hunting breed ect.). Now if you aren't looking for a dog to do any or all of the above then look for something a little less hyper. Think of the size you are looking for and the energy level. Once you have figured out exactly what your looking for you will find the right dog and the right match.

I personally like big dogs and absolutely love rotties. But I know by choosing a rottweiler, I know they don't require a lot of high maintenance, but do require exercise, they do need a job, and they will grow to be a very big dog.

I would suggest look into a few different breeds, read up about them to see what is involved in caring for them, what it would be like if you had one of them, because even when you get a mutt, knowing a little bit about their background will help you choose the right dog for you and your family :)

Hope this helps out a little bit, if you have questions on any specific breeds(mix) just let me know and I'll do what I can to help you out! Good luck on your search and thanks for adopting!

well dogs are like humans. There are different kinds of humans but not all have a the same personality. When i got my second dog, i tool my other dog with me to my friends house where i was going to get another dog. She seemed fine around the other dogs and took a liking to 'the oddball'. So it was more my dogs choice than mine. But you can't really predict how your dog will act towards other breeds.

I would suggest NOT getting a dog from the terrier group, as they prefer to be the only dog..Most other dogs will get along..
I have had Boston terrier,( they are not typical terrier) Pug, Poodles, Chihauhaus , Pekingese, and Pomeranians with huge dogs, and all got along fine...Cavalier King Charles, and Maltese seem to have no aggression issues..
My Doxie mix gets along with all the big dogs..

Terriers are not pack orientated - they are a solo breed, most any other breed will work, big or small. I have a 110# dog (Malamute/Pyr mix) and a 45# dog (Aussie) and they get along great!

Whatever breed you decide on, having 2 males or 2 females can sometimes be a problem. It is best to get a female companion for your male. Spaying and neutering is a must, of course!

Any dogs will get along with each other properly if introduced properly and the age difference is more than a year.

I think small dogs do best together. Big dogs tend to terrorize smaller dogs and are also very territorial to other big dogs. You are better off with one dog.
