when people post a question about breeding dogs why do people answer with a load of backlash? people have got to start some where if they want to be a responsible dog breeder and at least they are trying to gather information, so why do certain folks think they can dish out a load of crap when someones asking for advice?

to misbehaving or whatever. please dont compare having pups to having children, it an insult to all mothers. there is a lot of reposability to owning a dog but dont be so arrogant to say that they are the same when they are not. have you ever read a dog book it says the same!

Because, most people on here aren't wanting to become good breeders. They just want puppies, for whatever reason. No matter how nicely you speak to them and no matter how many websites you give them to help 'educate' them, they refuse to learn and usually fire back with insults and a complete misunderstanding of what a breeder is.

This is not a dog website. This is not a breed website. Gathering some basic information here is fine, however, questions about breeding, about genetics, about whelping, about gestation, about medical conditions, and other serious topics should NOT be addressed here. These need to be discussed with responsible breeders and veterinarians. This site is roughly 75% Backyard breeders and people who think that ANY purebred dog should be bred. That is NOT a good source of information.

Also, most people that come on here to find breeding info have already decided to breed. That they have made this decision without doing even an ounce of research angers many people - especially those who work with animal rescue groups.

These are not breeders 'just starting out' as you imply; these are breeders who have already made up their mind and typically get very pizzy when you recommend that they reconsider it. If they were 'starting some where (sic)', then the question would be "I'm thinking about breeding my Pug. Where should I start looking for information?" Not, "Is my dog pregnant?" or "When will my dog have her period?" or "My dog is mated when will she have baby puppies?". These are all questions from people who don't care what a BYB is and certainly fit the category.

Let's get it straight, owning a purebred dog, or even a papered dog, or even a papered dog from champion bloodlines DOES NOT MEAN that dog should be bred. AKC papers are NOT A SIGN of health, nearness to the breed standard, the quality of the dog, or the quality of the breeder. AKC papers merely state that the dog's listed parents are registered with the AKC.

Ethical breeders gather information BEFORE they decide to breed a dog. And that source of information should be the AKC and their breed club, not a website filled with children who don't know squat.

It has nothing to do with snobishness as is often reported. It's actually the exact opposite. It has to do with education. When responsible people see millions of animals being killed in shelters and unethical breeders coming on here looking for advice, they get upset. The breeders on here are the reasons for the high kill rates in shelters. If you aren't familiar with what a responsible breeder is, if you arent aware of the statistics, if you aren't aware of where shelter animals come from, then it's not really your place to judge those who *do* know these things. Ignorance is bliss, but not really helpful.

Personally, I believe that any time we help a BYB (BackYard Breeder), we give them an excuse to do it again.

BYBs breed without having a breeder mentor. BYBs breed without knowing the genetics of their dog and have not cleared their dogs with OFA or CERF. BYBs breed not to improve the breed, but to sell puppies, to give puppies to their famililes & friends, to create more of their 'perfect' pet dog, and breed by accident. BYBs don't typically provide socialization and proper shots for their puppies. BYBs don't feel they are responsible for the puppies they have created once the payment check clears. BYBs think that ANY purebred dog should be bred. BYBs think that ANY AKC or CKC dog NEEDS to be bred, and that it is their right. BYBs get angry when you ask them if they belong to a breed club. BYBs get angry when you ask them if they follow the AKC guidelines. BYBs are often overly defensive and full of excuses.

I have tried to be polite. I have tried to be nice. I have tried to honestly help BYBs to realize the errors of their ways. But right now, I'm so sick of it and so sick of watching my local shelter kill dog after dog after dog. I'm sick of watching mangled dogs come into rescue - dogs of puppy mills and BYBs. And I'm sick of getting hate mail from people who I politely try to help (see prego) who then swear at me and call me all kinds of names. I'm sick of offering reputable breeder sites to people, politely, and then being told to shove it. I'm sick of people who ask questions and then think that anyone who disagrees with them or who tries to enlighten them needs to be yelled at and screamed at and called stupid. These ARE NOT the trademarks of respectable breeders, period.

the problem is...there are so many dogs needing good homes..and when you see some of the questions posed by 'breeders' it does make you wonder about their ability to breed dogs. I know a breeder and i know how things are done.so when i see what appears to be someone genuine, like an accidental breeding..or well thought out...then i will offer my advice...but if i know someone is init just for the money...i might be tempted to moan. A good breeder is only in the job to improve their breed. I am also interested in breeding, but i have been researching it for years...I'm only 23...i plan on starting breeding in the next three years as i have a good working dog who's genes would be great to pass on, but my husband and i are searching for a good bloodline to mix him with...its not easy. Anyone who thinks breeding is easy and profitable should think again. The cost of proving your dogs, stud fees, caring for the litter..you wouldn't start getting your money back that you invested until at least the third litter..thats from a good breeder. Its the backyard breeders and puppy mills that are the problem. Poeple dont like giving advice in case they are encouraging a bad character. I think there is also a big problem that alot of people think there are so many 'mutts' out there. The truth is...most of the dogs in rescue nowadays..are pedigrees! There aren't as many crosses anymore...because breeders and people are being more careful, its the owners that are the problem. They dont really think about the time they will have to spend on the dog. it could be adding to the rescue population, but a good breeder will vet all homes to make sure they are going somewhere good. There are often unforseen circumstances as to why dogs are rehomed..divorce is the major one...poeple just like to make sure these animals are getting the love they deserve...

I think someone who wanted to be a serious breeder would find sources more reliable than YA! Im not being snotty by the way ..:)
There are far too many back yard breeders who think they can make a quick buck by getting their mutt together with a mutt down the street. They just contribute to the problem of too many unwanted animals. If you had been on the sharp end of those unwated mutts you would know what I mean. Some come in so badly abused and neglected that they have to be put to sleep, its not nice!
As you may gather I dont agree with your views but I can disagree and still be polite....;

I agree with you 100% !!! If a devoted animal lover wants to breed THEIR dog that is their business!!!! I had a very smart and beautiful male Doberman {he passed away of cancer three years ago} that I wanted a pup out of him. So I went out and bought a female dobie and breed them together. Luckily I kept two of the pups because like I said I lost my male(which was my best friend). After I breed them the one and only time I had them both fixed. I still have the female mother and her two off springs and I never regreted breeding them. As for the other five pups I made sure to find them good homes. I Didn't do it for the $$$$. Would I do it all over again, YES I would. This is a free country so to each their own! At least people who ask for advise are doing their best to breed and raise a litter the best they can. If they were not responsible they wouldn't care enough to ask for advise. For those who wants to criticize, move on to another question. Sonny, Oh yes, Dobermans are awesome

People are so snotty and righteous because other people are inconsiderate, disrespectful, fools who feel that anyone with a ***** should be able to breed the poor thing to death to make money rather than try to improve the breed.they get the cash and don't give a tinkers damn what happens to the pups once they leave.they don't care about the health problems they basically created that cause the new owners hearts to break while they watch this poor animal suffer and their bank accounts to go broke from the vet bills to treat the problems.
If anyone wants to get started breeding that has a true interest in the breed standards and wants to do it correctly the first place to get information is NOT here!
The first place I'd go is to a reputable breeder in the area and start asking questions about the breed itself and gradually work up to the pros and cons of breeding.next place I'd go is the vet to find out which tests should be done on both dogs BEFORE they were put together. And the exact cost of puppy check-ups,shots and de-worming.And lastly I'd start reading every book I could find on breeding dogs so I'd know exactly what I need to look for in a mate for my dog.Legal Liability in case an unhealthy pup slips out of my kennel undetected. And a whole lot more.

I've never bred dogs but my husband has in the past. It's a big headache and alot of times he ended up breaking evan on a litter after they were sold and several times left in the red due to problem deliveries or pups with health issues.I remember how upset he got when a pup did'nt survive the first night.Or having a young mother kill all the pups after he'd paid a hefty stud fee.
Don't get me wrong he LOVES puppies. The money did'nt matter but it broke his heart to pull the tiny little cold bodies out of the pen and get rid of them. And nothing made him angrier than to drive all over to check on the pups he'd sold and find one or more being abused or neglected in their new homes. He'd do alot of drive-bys over the course of a few weeks and when he saw his chance he'd steal the puppy and give it away to someone he knew would care for it.He absolutely would not rest until the pup was safe.
This was all many years ago. He's long since got out of breeding because it was'nt worth the upset and torment he went thru.
As far as dishing out a load of crap goes you should be thankful there are so many people dedicated to these animals and truly trying out of love to keep the lines pure and healthy. They are'nt afraid of competition they're afraid for the future abused and neglected pups of the world and their health because there are just too many people out there that could care less. And I just gotta say to all the smart butts out there trying to deter ignorant people who should'nt themselves be allowed to have children but want to breed dogs-YOU"RE MY HERO'S.THANK YOU AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

i posed a simple question the other day there and i got totally slated.i was actually only looking for peoples views in general and i got called ignorant and byb and one even said shame on you. i felt absolutely terrible at the end and resolved my question as quickly as i could.we absolutely love and adore our dogs.when we have bred and its time for the pups to go we get so depressed and sad,but the new owners always take our email address and send us frequent pictures and xmas cards.

Yes i agree with you totally and even when it doesnt even have to be about breeding I ask a question about introducing my new adopted dog to my other dog and got really awful and snoddy answers,, it was like i wasnt suppose be asking that question here and/or getting another dog and introducing them,,, And BYB means Back Yard Breeder,,, I think alot of the people that give the snoddy answers about breeding they are really hiding that they are trying to make a buck or two, and dont want to help others cause they are affraid of loosing profits of breeding their dogs, cause of the competetion of other breeders,,, I was wondering what this site is for if its not for questions

Because anyone one serious about breeding and wanted to do it for the betterment of the breed and not just to make a quick buck would not look for answers here. They would look into breed clubs, get advice from other good breeders, read books on the subject and attend dog shows. If someone is looking for answers here they are not breeding for the good of the animal they are breeding to make money. We have more then enough byb that breed poor quality dogs and we do not need anymore.

BYB MEANS BACKYARD BREEDER
As for breeding to "give another family a chance to have a pet" if an individual or a family want a dog there are millions of unwanted animals that are discarded (pure, mixed, all sizes and ages) why not try check out the shelters, rescues and pounds before encouraging yet another byb.People should not breed out of greed.

I know and i agree there are a lot of so called breeders in this game, and they keep their animals under really poor conditions, they usually live on a farm with the animals being kept outside in freezing conditions with hardly no food, all in the name of making a profit and they come on here an verbally attack people. It makes me sick and you purchase a pup from one of these so called clued up idiots an when you get the pup home u find its full of worms and has got fleas. and also there is every breed going under the sun and they preach everything about nothing usually verbal diarrhea.

they most likely dont like dogs, and then again may not like all the effort you have to put into them. Like I just answered someone else dogs are family members and should be treated with love and affection. If you want to breed your dog then go ahead it will give another family the chance to have a pet. Take no notice of the bigots in our lives. I would breed mine if I could but he had cancer in his you know what and they had to be removed.
