I believe it is my responsibility to protect myself and my family, i have always believed this and cannot understand why anyone would want to ban weapons from private citizens. The wisest question i have seen posted in some time, hopefully you will continue to provide all the people on here the ability to make use of their braincells, Granted, there are some who will miss your point but i can see that it has nothing to do with gun control and should be treated as a legitimate question to encourage debate and provide people the info to protect themselves and their families.

So you're saying that ALL citizens should have a gun, then? Are you saying that YOU'RE going to protect me? I don't think so. I don't believe in banning all guns from all citizens, but I personally don't want a gun for myself. So who protects me? I'm careful where I go and when I go... I have good locks and a big dog. I'll call the police if I think I need to... and if that's not enough, oh well. Read about it in the paper. I'm not worried. Have you noticed? There's NOT a ban on firearms, and STILL, people are getting murdered on a pretty regular basis-- even here in Texas where citizens have a right to have guns.

The police are charged with the overall protection of a community. The can not protect every person or entity at all times.
The police can not really prevent crime either. They can set up measures to lessen it but not control it. They are bound by the constitution and laws, the criminals are not.
As far as gun control: I believe that if you take the right away from the people to bare arms, then all that has arms is the criminals and the police. Guns don't kill people, people do. For anyone one to think that if guns were outlawed then crime would end is just lying to you and themselves. Murder is not about a weapon... Its about a mind set. If someone wants to kill someone, they will do it with any weapon handy.
People have been killing people for as long as we have been on this earth. Back in the age of the sword, thousands were killed.
If you outlaw guns, new weapons will just take their place.

No, the police cannot protect everyone all of the time, if they could there would be no murders. It's an idividuals reponsibility for self-protection. Don't EVER forget that. Firearms have nothing to do with it and they are only a tool for that protection. Leading a clean, law-abiding life will probably do more for you than any firearm will. You know the old saying- "An ounce of Prevention........."

I agree with Dink, cops can't protect everybody.
As for gun control I heard a while back that a couple of cities did an experiment, one city banned guns and the other required every household to own one. Guess which one the crime rate went down in. If you guessed the one that required guns you would have guessed right. Besides the day they totally ban guns is the day they pry my gun from my hand.

Law enforce fails to protect anyone. If you ever have a break in or someone threaten you they'll come by and happily take a report, about 3 hours after you call. That's about their extent of protection, they're much better at tickets.

The criminals will protect you, they will steal off of your property and then there is no threat.
But of course the same people who want to take guns away want to take all the money from the wealthy and give it to the poor, so no one will have anything anyway

No.... I agree with your statement, and in fact data supports it. In states with right to carry laws crime is down as opposed to states with strict gun control laws.
