How house bound is he? Could you get him a wheel chair and get him out and about?
If not, what are his hobbies, or things he used to like to do?
Its hard to think of something with so little info!
Would he like a little kitten or little dog? Only get him that if he can look after it and dont do it as a surprise check first!
Does he like jigsaw puzzles, books, crosswords, craft work?
How about a bird table/feeders that he could watch from the window? With a book so he can check out the birds that visit.

how about a large jigsaw puzzle you can buy those special mats that go with them so they just have to be rolled up and the puzzle stays in place or some paints and plain canvas and let him have some fun creating a picture

How about a coupl e of saltwater crocodiles and a copy of the Koran.
As long as he kept his feet up, the crocs wouldnt be able to snap at his ankles while reading the Koran to his grandchildren!!
