Give him a bone to chew

Dogs love chewing wood - it is perfect for the job.
Give him loads of other nice stuff to chew instead to keep his mind off the wood you don't want him to touch. Other things dogs love to chew include pigs ears, raw hide, roast joints from the pet shop.
Remove the things he is in the habit of chewing if you can. If you can't move something away from the dog's reach, put something that tastes nasty on it. Every time hes goes towards it call him away and give him one of the things you have bought that hes allowed to chew on. If he ends up trying to chew the thing hes not allowed when you aren't there to stop him then he'll get a shock when he tastes the yukky stuff and it will help break the habit.
You can buy yukky tasting stuff from a pet shop, like bitter apple spray, or use your imagination and use a small dash of tabasco or chilli sauce or febreeze spray - tastes horrible. He'll only need to touch it once and if hes sensible - a sniff will warn him off!

Your dog is probably bored, get some chew toys and also take him/her to a vet, there might be a problem with the teeth. However if it is a young dog then teething might be the problem believe it or not.

My dog chews aon anything he can sink his teeth into. I found that if you put a few drops of vinegar on it, the dog won't chew it. There's also this spray called Bitter Apple that you can get at Petsmart that works.

Make him realise he is being naughty, use the tone of your voice, so he knows you are angry with him, and buy him something else to chew on, a large bone from the pet shop, make him realise, this is the only thing he is allowed to chew. Good luck!

We tend to think of dog training as a series of steps for teaching particular behaviors. To teach a dog to stay in a particular position, you reward her as she remains in place for gradually longer times, at gradually greater distances, with gradually increasing degrees of distraction.
